with 6 gallons left in the 34 gallon tank? had to sit in traffic facing up hill and I'm guessing it all ran to the back of the tank. How many gallons do you guys usually run them down to?

I usually fill up up with about 5 imp gallons or 6 of yours left in the tank. So it's the same as yours.

Run it down till someone has to come out with a diesel can... :D Usually get some warning before it totally quits though.

Depends on the filling station and amount of "foam" you get as to the accuracy off "full" and the number of gal you can put in the tank. You may not be able to use all 34 gal from the tank.

And believe me you dont want to run out of fuel, will kill an IP if you crank on it that way.

Of course 34-6=26 which was the factory option on these trucks, are you sure it is 34 gallon :)

I believe the 26 gallon tanks are on the regular cab short box trucks. Every long box i've had is 34 gallon. I've run them down to 2 gallons:rolleyes5::nono: and not had it die.I'm shure it didn't help the fuel filter any though:eek:

My 92 std cab long box has a 34 gallon tank. My 95 burb has a 42 gallon tank I think. When I ran the the burb down close to empty it sure put a dent in the pocket book when fuel was close to 5 bucks a gallon.

34-6= 28 ):h

im thinkin it was just the hill, as soon as i got it flat and bled the filter it ran fine and I've never had the problem when I fill it when is reads empty haha.

I'm one those guys that runs er down till the orange warning on empty. I hate myself for that all the time. I can't stop.

I've run out 2 times in the last 5 years. Of course it was always close to home.

I will say that when I'm on a trip I keep er filled up.

I always run mine down to e then fill it up. This has caused me to run out a few times. I never learn and continue to run it down like that.

buddy, did you kill an IP? You murderer.

I fill at 30 gallons usually, Burb has over 40 gal tank. yesterday we put in 124 liters, most since I bought it (we're in NovA Scotia right now visiting).
Gauge was just touching the red. Never run out of diesel, gas yes; years ago.

After I changed my tank, and its definitely a 34 gallon, I ran out several times. Something I did caused the gauge to act a little different, for one thing when it gets into the red, it can run out at any time and has. Other times I've had to drive in the red quite a while and made it. It definitely goes away faster as it drops: From full it takes forever to get to 1/2, then from 1/2 to 1/4 goes faster, and under 1/4 goes extremely fast. Never had a bit of trouble getting it refired though, just dump a few gallons in the tank, turn the key on for 30 seconds then give it a couple tries, never cranking more than about 20-30 seconds. I just have to watch the gauge a lot closer than I used to, because low means empty.

Anyway, what I wanted to say is when I run mine down way into the red and am really on borrowed time and just about to stall, I can only get 26 gallons in it. Kinda pisses me off, to know I've been stranded out of fuel with 8 gallons left on board. After the first couple of 26 gallon fillups I even went back and checked where I bought the tank, to make sure I got the 34.

Dan, it's possible your pickup has a crack and when the fuel gets below it it starves for fuel. Seen that on tractors.

The bypass valve in the tank will allow fuel to suck in even if the sock is plugged.

If you run out of fuel, the best way to get going is to remove the fuel line at the IP, then run the lift pump until air free fuel flows, reconnect and then cycle the lift pump a little more to force fuel into the IP.

Then go for a restart. The critter should fire off shortly. They will miss and hicup for a bit untill all the air is out.

No real need to open the injector lines as the injectors are self bleeding on these.

Contrary to the popular myth that the 6.5 will not bleed itself, yess it will and fairly quickly if the IP has fuel to it that is air free.
