Anyone Ever Have Both Bolts Shear Off From Keeping The Starter Secured?

Yeah it just happened to this guy..... luckily I was in my driveway when said bolts sheard. Brand new starter installed by a very reputable transmission shop back in March. Also luckily, they are trying to fit me in to their schedule to have it repaired.
 
I bet they forgot to install the brace. It is mounted on the block in front of a freeze plug and on the starter facing toward the front.
It is famous for not being installed. When it is not there it breaks starter bolts.
 
Well make them eat thier mistake it aint that hard to do it right if u cut the wheels to the left and go through the inner fender flap to remove the bolt from the block just loosen the nut on starter a little so u can move it if it gets in the way as u bring starter out with the bracket on it last bracket I bought at gm dealer was bout 6-8 bucks I have taken the old starter bolts and used the broken off end to reach in and turn the piece in hole out if u can pull that off it saves drilling easout and retap time most I have delt with broke jagged and thats hard to drill any way

As a diesel repair shop owner I would hate to have my center mast shot at but good help is hard to find I have found I cant find help that cares about my reputation with my customers so I hire employees to go get me tools and clean up my mess and do all bolt turning/diagnostic work my self every time I think about expanding a story like urs brings me back to reality so thank you for keeping me from getting greedy

If this is a manual trans it may have a automatic p/n starter where the nosecone is interfering. The nosecones are different between the two.

Diesels are tough on starters. Does this engine have any trouble starting? Pics will help. If the bracket broke or was loose would be another thought.

Gas and diesel starters and flexplates are different you can't mix parts w/o the starter getting thrown off the engine - very quickly.

This will take new bolts from the dealer and I would replace the starter just in case the armature is bent or other issues that caused it to break free. The Powermaster starter is a good replacement and will work on auto or manual trans trucks.
 
this is the same pic I just sent to the owner of the shop. I've had to yell at him and his wife since she just happened to be there back when my tranny was replaced in March. Turns out the tranny was fine and it was the transfer case! The transfer case had the old style shift fork instead of the new beefed up fork. the transfer case would shift in N from 2H on it's own!
 
Yea I was gonna mention there is a difference in starter bolts for diesels and gas burner seams like a difference in thread lengh and the diesel bolts may be a harder bolt to its been a long time since I did a side by side comparison and bracket or not most times im my past their was a timing issue or a can of starting fluid involved to cause the engine to kick back

Yea thats the harder one of the two this is why I say just loosen this one a little and leave it on starter or leave it loose going back in

Cause it is hard to start the nut on the stud when the starteris bolted to the block I use a fine tooth rachet wrench to tighten up after the block bolt is tight

That comment bout timming and starting fluid is an example of some thing a shop owner might say to make u feel like its not their fault just so u will be ready for them if thay try to charge u any more for their mistake

yeah definitely no starting fluid in this motor. It's had no problem starting at all especially since it only has roughly 20K miles on it. It's not hard to start a diesel at all here in Hawaii on Oahu.
 
I was just about to start my own thread on repairing these things. If you don't know what your doing a ten minute job could turn into an all nighter. I have had this happen to two of my trucks now, both times because of that little bracket not being installed by previous owners. Well here is how you fix it quick with no hassle. Head right down to your parts store (I live in twentynine palms CA so all I have is autozone :() and pick up yourself a set of LEFT hand drill bits. Az had a cheap set for 6 $. Use the smallest one to make a pilot hole. More of a pilot dent. You really don't need much. Just enough to make sure your centered. Then jump up to one or two sizes smaller that the diameter of the starter bolt threads. As soon as the bit starts to cut I guaranty thr bolts will thread themselves right out. When I did it I didn't even disconnect the starter. I just disconnected the batteries and pushed the starter forward out of my way so I could begin drilling. Eazy day. Just a 10 minute fix and I was back on the road
 
Be nice, but, the bracket is clearly NOT on the engine. Neither is the block bolt that holds it in place. Is the heat shield in place? After replacing a transmission over a transfer case I question your shop choice. If it worked out ok maybe I don't need to?
