The wife has a 2003 ford escape with the 3.0, we went to go in town Sat. night and it started running rough, engine light came on. It runs rough when accelerating like its stumbling. Read the codes today and they are p0316, and p0302. Any ideas? Oh and to replace the plugs, coils on the back bank you have to remove the intake? What is the ford engineers major malfunction.

#2 cyl is misfiring is the 302 code and 316 just confirms it was right at startup. It's best to start with simple and see what the plug and wire look like before you assume it's a coil.
You're kidding about the intake, right? Please tell me you're kidding...

Mitsubishi used that design as well on many of there engines. I know on most minivans you have to either pull the intake, or turn yourself into a contortionist to do the back plugs.

Wish I was Kidding, it has no plug wires just boots with a spring connecting the coil pack to the plug, this will be my last ford, they consistently have the more retarded designs. Its misfiring on more than just start up, stumbles really bad when going down the road.

Wait til you have to replace the alternator! It is crammed between the engine and the firewall.

I had a 03 Escape, I had to the alternator twice in one day!

I had a oil leak,a few years back and it would leak down into my ignition coils and basicly fry it out and cause misfires...something to look into

I've had 2 of this style escape.

If you know the plugs haven't been replaced might as well do a tune up now. if your tight on money you can swap that coil with another coil and see if the problem "follows" the coil.

Removing the intake honestly isn't that hard. I had to replace the mani-verters in mine. That's right, the catalytic converters are part of the manifolds. Removed the intake and rear valve cover and snuck the rear manifold out the top. I was told the mounts needed to be removed and the engine lowered to perform. They were so plugged after a few minuted of driving they would glow red, and eventually blew a hole out the EGR by the time i figured out the issue.

When you make the intake runners longer it gains you a little more torque on a N/A rig. The reason they are the way they are, plus its in a tight spot.

What are the condition of the plugs? How many miles on the rig?
