__Basically cranks runs fine all of the time in cooler weather..seems after summer hits 90 degrees or so..will crank fine in the mornings, but if i run it for a while and need to stop and turn off engine, it is very hard to start...will turn over and over and over then will catch and crank...its been doing this for a few years, but i only drive it to work and just never got a firm diagnosis... put a new pmd on and that didnt seem to help much if any... lift pump was replaced last year on the frame....could it be the OPS switch? I know I need new injectors and plugs just as a preventative thing....truck runs great and pretty good pep for a truck 14 years old...just this cranking issue after running it in hot weather...no diesel peeps here except dealers and really dont feel like giving them my money when I could possibly fix myself...just need a firm diagnosis.._______________________________

Open the T valve on the coolant crossover manifold while running and check fuel flow, if you can put a psi gauge on it and check fuel pressure.

Get the PMD out of the engine bay as soon as possible

Are you certain it cranks just as fast when its warm? Or even faster? Hot batteries and battery cables can cause high resistance and starter might not crank as fast.

Check lift pump pressure when idling as NVW says.

Otherwise there is a common hot IP hard start problem. And to check the next few times try pouring a bottle of water over the IP before cranking when hot. If it gives you no problems like that its likely an IP issue.

I'm sort of curious about the amount of time you let it sit before trying to start it again, and how warm the engine is...

After you try what the guys above are thinking, if you haven't found anything, I'd like you to try pulling off the CTS plug (it's the coolant-temp sensor, located in the thermostat housing) before you try to start it.

See what happens. The CTS sends a signal re: engine temp back to the PCM, which controls glowplug on-time... when it's cold, you get lots of time. When it's unplugged, the PCM sees the temp as -40 and gives maximum time. The other thing it does is advance the timing a bit to make it easier to start; if your timing is a bit retarded (timing chains stetch over time), then your truck will start hard without being advanced again.

If it doesn't help, you lose nothing. Put the plug back on.

If it does, then you need to see if the issue is bad sensor or if you need to be re-timed.

Jim

Thanks for the quick info guys, I appreciate it. Will try all of the above...Couple of questions, how much water to pour on the injection pump. What should my fuel pressure be running at the t connector?

Probably not the problem, but you should replace your glows and injectors after you figure this out. Overdue....
