Hello all, recently picked up an alternator totally free (CS-130) from deejaaa. Great guy btw! Condition was unkown by both of us. Installed it last night and it charges a little above red, and drops way down as the heater and high beams were turned on. So i took it back out to get it tested. They said the voltage regulator isnt operating correctly. I found a website that has a upgrade kit for the cs-121 and cs-130.

Site: http://www.alternatorparts.com/7130_7140.htm

Has anyone done this before? Im looking at getting the kit to make it 140 amp. Looks fairly simple to complete. For a new/reman. cs-130 rated at 140amps from NAPA costs almost 200 bucks.

Im also confused about which kit i would need, the regular kit or the one for the self exciting (one wire) voltage regulator. Im learning as i go.

Thanks for any insight!

You can use either, the self exciting kit only needs the battery wire. They have a write up on it on their site.

Can you fit a CS-144 in there? If so make a new rear bracket for the CS-144 and use one of them. Oriley's 124 AMP CS-144 is only $124.99. 140A CS-144 is only $149.99. The CS-130 don't last long enough to be worth the trouble - regulators, diodes, and rear bearings all need to be changed when opening one up along with the fun soldering to get there. Skip one of the listed items and you will be soon back in the unit to change that part out.

I tried to go that route. I got a CS-144 from my local J/Y off of a 97' 6.5 school bus. I tried to mount it in my rig but that was a failure due to the Fisher plow pump and bracketry on the drivers side of my engine. So to install the CS-144 alternator in my truck will require major bracket re-fabrication (its major because i dont have a welder) to get the plow pump to mount up after the new alternator gets installed. The plow pump also needs to pivot in order to tighten and loosten the bolts. The bracketry is all fisher designed stuff and i dont have a welder to make my own brackets.

Here is a picture i took yesturday with deejaaas alternator installed. There is very little clearence between the alternator case and the bracket for the plow pump. The piece could possibly be cut off, however i think it is pretty structural, i wish i had a welder is i could weld a new cross brace in lower and that would solve the problem. The cross brace needs to be moved down at least 1/4 of an inch to even think about the cs-144 possibly fitting.
