I think primarily it would be to power the hydrailic pump if you had a dump body on a chassis cab. Typically that would be on a 3500 dually and up unit.
 
^^^Hydraulic pump or a gear drive that turns a PTO shaft for running other things.

On our trucks there really isnt much room under there to mount up one of these units but in other applications there is plenty of room Such as the Kodiak trucks which use the Allison 2000, same tranny as ours physically but rated for more weight and with no parking pawl, many of these trucks are equipped with some sort of pto driven feature.
