air intake location changed.....

started this, took less than an hour. it is still in the engine bay but when i put a heat shield in front of the manifold, i think it will be much cooler. i still have some pipe and the other half to relocate it again if i need to.

It is still hot underhood air... :rolleyes5: Really should get a K-47 as cold air to a non-intercooled turbo makes a huge difference in power and engine heat vs. hot underhood air. Figure 135 IAT on a 100 degree day at cruise - just measured with my 95 with the ATT and K47. Underhood air is at least 200 degrees with the AC on as the condenser will be 160 degrees before the radiator.
 
The only thing that would bother me now is if you go through a huge puddle that intake looks like a prime candidate for getting water in(engine suction can pull water straight up).

Granted i'm running a similar setup on my K-5, but at the same time it's not that low down, and it also has a heatshield around the filter, which protects they very bottom of the filter as well(deflects water sort-of).
 
I always wanted to put a D-MAX scoop and box setup somehow. Think it would work nice but the total setup is like 600 dollars, and would have to move the pass battery tray.
 
i have only driven it 60 miles to work this morn. my mind wants me to think that there is a big change but reality will be the true judge. will have to give it a week to see what mileage is.
can't the run K-47, bypass filter is there on fender, until i relocate batterie(s). i am going to weld a bung to install a temp gauge, run it both ways to see temps.
didn't think about the water splash, i do run through some water from time to time, pretty fast. when i put the heat shield for the manifold, i will put one for a splash shield also. will be aluminum out of an old sign.
 
installed a temp gauge on the intake, close to the filter. going to get some readings tomorrow, morning and afternoon. i will then put it the way it was and see if location makes a diff. right now it is in the same spot i moved it to, above the frame rail.

Not to hijack, but as read with my ScanGauge the IATs on my intercooled (key point!) truck tends to run ~20-30* above outside temp with this intake setup:

I have since rigged up a heat shield of sorts between the turbo/manifold and air filter. This is factored in to what I wrote above. I have often wondered what IATs are stock.
 
me too. i don't have the room to put the stock air box back on but i will take readings to see where the best place is. i would be happy with 20-30* above ambient. i just won't know till tomorrow.
 
have some info from this morning. air temp at 6:30 was 75*, IAT was 105* driving 70 mph. let it idle for 10 mins, was between 120-130*. after 10 mins of shutdown showed 128*. hovered 125* during idle after shutdown but as soon as speed picked up it dropped to 110*. if outside temps were correct, there was a 30* diff. i will put in another gauge under the hood to try to get some readings from around outside the filter as well as air temps. i have a few of these probes sitting around.
today's high is going to be 99 after work and will see what happens with more road heat.
 
on the drive home, had diff results. to start with, at 3:30, after sitting on a white rock parking area, it was 140* on the gauge from just sitting 8 hours. air temp was 99*. at 4:00, driving 70, it showed 124*. didn't fluctuate more than 2-3*, up or down, from there. i will drive this way for the rest of the week, switch it back where it was at the beginning with what i started with and see if there's a change. right now, i am pleased with the results. from all the comments i've read, i was expecting 150-200* but not what i've seen.
 
when i get home later today, i'm going to drill/tap upper intake and install temp gauge to get a charged air reading. the other has been incoming air. i will leave both gauges in place to see what the diff is.
 
drilled and tapped the upper manifold to get some readings from charged air. have a feeling i am going to see some high numbers.

on the ride home, when the sun is out, sure temps will climb.
was kind of cool, for this time of year, because we had some rain yest, was around 75*.
