Since my fuel mileage seems like it was going to crap, I decided to purchase a new air filter and try that. I bought an AC Delco Air Filter at the dealer (Part NO. A3087C) for about 52 bucks. When we opened the box I noticed the filter had 2 parts to it. The main filter itself and then a small rubber ring that is about and inch or two wide. It appears that the one end of the filter fits into that rubber ring. It seems that the rubber ring is made to seal off the intake tube on the exit side of the filter. Other words to force all the air through the filter and prevent air and trash from getting past the filter. One of the guys at the parts counter said that the rubber seal ring is not always used, so that got up my curiosity. He said you will have to read the instructions to see. I read them when I got home and it said to use it. I was thinking that the older filters were a one piece filter with the seal ring on the end. Maybe that part number was A2947 I don't know, because the is the first time I have installed a new air filter in my 2006 Chevy.

Tell me if I am on the right track on this. Also it appears that the installation would be pretty simple, any pointers on installation or anything I should watch out for?

It's real easy bud! And yes, use the ring. Make sure you clean out the housing and the drain thing isn't plugged up.
They discontinued the original one and you bought the correct replacement part #.

Thanks for your quick response. If I get time I will install it tomorrow evening. I am towing the hunting camper and stuff up to deer camp on Saturday so I guess that will tell the tell on the fuel mileage. I use to get from 12.8 MPG to 14.3 MPG towing the camper based on the speed and route I traveled.

Gotta change the filter every 25-30k, can't trust the filter minder thing. Those are worthless POS's. Our fell out and I had to duct-tape over it to keep dirt out of the engine.

On two trucks, I never once saw the filter meter move at all. I think it's worthless, unless you're running 900 h.p. where it would suck enough air to feed an F/A-18.

The new filters aren't the blue circular Donaldsons anymore?

I also found that a little lube on the rubber ring helps the filter seat in the housing easier.

Nick: I just inquired about the blue media filters. Apparently they are not making them anymore.

What do the new filters look like?
About the same. White filter media and the rubber gasket is not glued on as said earlier.
I don't recall all of the info but we had an informative thread about the flow characteristics between the 2 over at DP a couple of years ago (less than a month before we all came here) and IIRC the new ones don't flow quite as good but the difference is pretty insignificant.

The last Donaldson branded filter I saw was also white, but did not have a separate gasket. It was a few months ago though.

Yes what he said. The filter was white (AC Delco) that I just bought and it had the part number of A3087C. It had the rubber sealer gasket that went on the motor side (Outlet) of the filter. The old filter that came out of the truck was a blue Donaldson one piece and it was a better looking filter. It was not too bad getting it out and the new one was a tight fit for sure, which I am sure a tight seal is what I want. When I got the old filter out, I shook it on a hard surface and it was unreal how much dirt and crap fell out of it. I am hoping that was my mileage robbing culprit, because I just had just checked my fuel mileage and it was a disappointing 13.8 MPG hand calculated. Most of that was non towing miles and the only thing I have towed on that tank of fuel was a 4X4 Massey Ferguson tractor and a riding lawn mower for a short distance of about 2 miles. Saturday will be the test to see if my mileage is back to normal. I am towing the hunting camper along with a bunch of gear to deer camp which is 235 miles one way. The return trip will be empty and I can check it coming back.
