Finally figured out why my ABS light was on. It says left front speed sensor is bad. Is there any tricks to replacing the speed sensor?
Thanks,
Bob

Probably just the wire where it goes thru a metal clip. Might be an easy fix. Sensor comes out pretty easy you have to swap them from one hub to the next when you replace hubs.

I got mine replaced but I took it to my mechanics to do it.
He said he has to get the hub out to get to it. He charged me 1.5 hours but he has all the tools. He is not a diesel mechanic, just a mechanic.

I got the sensor from the bay for dirt cheap. I brought my own part. I have been going to him since 1996. So he does not mind if I bring my own part, besides he does not have to find it for me.

Park the truck NOW, and check out wheel bearings.

That is exactly the same fault mine gave when bearing was failing, it fuzzed up the ABS sensor, and ABS came lite came on, a week later the bearing completely failed/locked the shaft and wheel snapped off end of the axle shaft/licknut, fortunately only doing 25 mph at time it happened.

ABS sensor is integral to bearing cartridge, can't replace it I was told, aslo told this is a very common failure on GM trucks, so I replaced other bearing cartridge as well, 180K on truck when it happened.

If it is integral and can't be replaced how come when you buy new hubs it doesn't come with ABS sensor?

I've also seen lots of hub failure without the abs light coming on. It is always a good idea to check the hubs out anytime you are looking at the brakes.

It does come intergral with new sensor, or at least mine did, possibly a change to later year models, I thought it was a simple sensor swap, could not remove mine, so I ignored the ABS lite, learned hard way to not ignore it.

It is called ABS Wheel Speed Sensor.
It is there in every vehicle in different format.

The best source is Rock Auto search.

Unless, your truck don't have ABS.

In 95, It is hook up to that box between the battery and the fuse box on the driver side. Usually, it said "Kelsey Hayes" or something like that. The wheel connector can be accessed on the fender wheel well behind the rubber flap (if you still have it, mine doesn't) attach to the frame.

I got one ABS sensor failing [Broke wire at the sensor]on my 98, installed one from a chevy S10[was identical]I had hanging on my shop wall, even the plugin is the same. works fine.
No need to take the hub out either, just the rotor, caliper bracket and shield.

Only thing in the hub is the sensor disc[part of the shaft]

On an 8 stud you need to remove wheel bearing assembly to access the ABS sensor. You can buy sensor separate, some hubs come with, some don't. Sometimes just the wires are pooched...

Steelydan is right... as I've just change my ABS sensors GM#15990504 R/H GM#15990503 L/H the worst thing was removing the 4x15mm bolts coz the rust & the heads were rounded off even with an induction heater I had grind and drill 4 of them out.

Put the Truck in 4x4 when replacing so as when you push on the hub you don't push the axel in..other wise you will have to strap the cv boot around something the to hold it..

I have also brought 2 new hub assy they came complete with rotors ABS & wheel studs
GM#15990510 R/H GM#15990509 L/H.

If I had sat down and thought it out I would have ordered the hubs from :
If you have 8 Studs, your hubs are listed below...
Left Hand (Driver's Side) - http://mibearings.com/paypalparts/515015.html
Right Hand (Passenger's Side) - http://mibearings.com/paypalparts/515016.html
If you also need the seals for the front.

And the rotors & brake pads from buybrakes.com powerslot rotors.

P# 8242PSL, 8242PSR with the Hawk LTS pads P# HB296Y-670 for better stopping cooling wear etc.

I just checked the wheel bearing and it's not that, so that's a relief. I guess I just need to find a deal on the sensor.
