Today was the first time i have towed in the snow with this controller and so far i am not impressed. I adjusted the controller as usual and headed down the hill with about 8k behind me like any other day. I knew it was slippery so i had it in 4X4 and slowed it down a bit. Now, this controller works awesome on dry roads but did not work at all when the truck started sliding. I cranked up the voltage and the boost setting and it still did not apply the trailer brakes. Needless to say i went for a ride. When i got to the bottom of the hill i pulled over and checked my settings and everything was normal. I pulled out where the snow had been plowed and then the brakes locked right up when i applied the brakes. So i re-adjusted them back to where they were to begin with. Now it seems to me as long as the truck itself had traction to stop then the trailer brakes worked properly, but as soon as the truck lost traction and could not stop then the trailer brakes no longer worked either. I understand that the controller works off inertia but damn, the trailer brakes still have to work even if the truck still cannot slow down. Does anyone else have this problem?

Use the manual override. Those are the situations that it's there for.

Gotta be careful with trailer brakes on ice anyway. I set trailer control pretty light in winter conditions to avoid any possibility of the trailer tires locking up. I really don't want to see my trailer passing me :D

Oh i cranked the voltage up and held the lever right over and that didnt work either. I will be digging out the directions to see what they say too.

Are you using the 6.1, 6.2, or 6.3 program? I would say you could use the 6.2 or 6.3 program with that trailer. I am referring to the boost program. That might help.

Are you sure the trailer tires didnt lock up and it was sliding?

You say the truck was sliding, so it is very possible the trailer did too....Once the tires break loose on slick conditions, you lose ALL stopping ability on them.

I 1st had it on the 6.1 but switched it to the 6.3 setting when the brakes failed to work. The trailer tires were definitly still turning and i agree that the manual lever should overide the controller. It just baffles me that everything works fine on dry roads, it was the first time towing in snow with this controller. I usually dont tow in snow conditions, instead i have the plow/sander on the truck. I will be towing with it again today, i will have to take it on some icy roads to see if i can figure this out.

Guys, I think it is actually b.1, b.2, and b.3, for boost, not 6.1, etc.

The manual override shouldn't care what your truck tires are doing, definitely have a problem there.

no problem, I remember thinking the same thing when I hooked mine up, seemed obvious once I figured it out though, isn't hindsight great.

I towed my enclosed trailer this evening and of course it worked fine. I will have to wait until the roads are slick again and try the equipment trailer again. Any other time it has towed fine when loaded. Maybe it was a fluke thing??

BOOST Settings

Guys, I think it is actually b.1, b.2, and b.3, for boost, not 6.1, etc.

You are correct, my bad. My point being was just making sure the setting was correct. It is very difficult to drive on ice or in icy conditions with a heavy trailer. I do not believe they make any trailer brakes with an anti lock features or settings. That is what is needed, anti lock brakes on trailers! ;)

In order for the trailer to track straight behind the tow vehicle, the trailer brakes MUST come on first and a little stronger than the tow vehicle, or else!

I had a situation where my 7 pin wouldn't work all the time, I discovered that I had a corroded pin and i simply replaced the receptacle and that resovlved my problem. I have had to use boost settings on mine before and sometimes even when I use the manual override I can't get the trailer tires to lock up.....makes me wonder if the controller is reading something from the truck to prevent the trailer from locking up.
