I have a 95 Suburban 6.5TD and I have a leak on the back of the a/c compressor. I like to replace the a/c compressor. Here are my few questions:

1). While doing this work, should I replace the compressor, accumulator, orifice tube or just the compressor?

2). How can you tell if I have dual front and rear a/c? I have of course the main control panel, on the top near the visor to control the fan speed and temp for the rear vents and if you sit in the middle roll seats and look up, you'll also see another control panel. Does this mean I have dual system?

3). I don't know where the orifice tube is located, can anyone tell where it is? I got a variable orifice tube, would this work or should I stick to the standard tube?

4). Should I also buy a set of o-rings just in case I need to replace them too?

5). After the job is done, can I just buy charing kit from autozone and fill up the system or do I need a special machine to do that?

Thank you.

Hey Mug, I'm no HVAC specialist but I'll try to answer your questions best as I can....

1. It is said when you open up your system you should change the Accumulator, (Something to do with moisture I think) they are pretty inexpensive and provide a extra layer of Insurance. Same with the Orifice tube or VOV.

BUT, I think you have a dual setup and there is supposed to be a VOV already in the rear section, with this said, you CANNOT run 2 VOV's.....They do not work right, you need to put a regular Orifice tube in the front.

2. I think YES, from your description.

3. Standard Orifice.....See #1. As for location, I'm not sure......PM (Moderator) THE FERMANATOR (He's very knowledgeable.)

4. Can't hurt.

5. You should have the system Vacumed and refilled with the machine.....No guessing about the system holding Vacum (Leaks), and you are sure to get a full fill of freon, I believe on a Burb it's 2 1/2 lbs.

Or if your handy, you can evacuate with a manual machine and fill with HVAC gauges, if you know what your doing.

From your description you have dual air. You cannot use the variable orifice tube with dual air and have a nice cold A/C(tried it and it SUCKED). The orifice tube is located in teh Y pipe on the passenger side inner fenderwell down beneath where the battery is mounted. You will see a single line come off of the condenser, and it will Y off with one going to the back and the other to the front. Right behind that Y will be a connection, and the orifice is inside of it. If the compressor was leaking then all you need to do is change teh compressor, accumulator, and orifice, but if teh compressor failed and made any sort of noise then you should change out the condenser. If you are not changing out the condenser, then DO NOT take teh lines loose from it. The condenser is aluminum and the lines are steel, they are almost always seized together and teh condenser threads come off and you have to replace it to fix it(or find somebody to weld new ends on it). An Oring kit is only a few bucks, and is always a good idea to have one just in case as many times the new parts will come with the wrong orings.

I understand now and I think I know what needs to be done. Thank you for your reply.
