A better Lift Pump

Here is a short tale of two lift pumps. The 99 Burb has a Delco lift pump from the sealer with the HP4 - runs like a bat out of hell. My 96 on the other hand has a Carter lift pump from SSDiesel, and it cannot keep up with the fuel requirements of the HP4.

I know TD mentioned a Walbro pump that may fit the bill for more 6.5 fueling, but I am not sure what model.

Also I think Kennedy has a Duramax lift pump kit for the 6.5. Does anyone have experience with this solution?

FWIW I do plan on installing the A Team turbos at some point and ditching the GM-8 and GM-5 stockers.

Thanks!

Another option is to run the pump intended for 93- model year. It has a slightly higher pressure and volume than 94+ model year. 93- model year used the Mechanical IP instead of the Electronic IP. I am not sure the number for Delco but it is Delphi FP905 (spec at 9.5 - 14 PSI). I am not sure if this is sufficient for HP4 since I don't have HP4.

Pricing is important, Adrian... I put in Heath's HO LP because it wasn't all THAT much more expensive than what I could get at the dealer or NAPA up here, and none of the guys I talked to up here could answer the question you're asking... they all said:

"there's no way that your IP will want more fuel than this LP can provide... trust me"

I could have ordered from SSDiesel, but the UPS thing would have made it just as expensive, and to tell the truth, I wasn't comfortable with Walt's answer... it was the same as my dealer up here. No numbers, just a 'trust me' thing.

Maybe dealer cost is less down there, but... the risk is that the LP won't keep up, and it sounds like you already have one of those.

I'm running the hp4, I keep a fuel pressure guage(direct read) at the IP routed to cab. With Heath's LP, I run about 7 psi at idle, and 2.3 at WOT. The only problem I had was fuel cap would create vacuum and cause fuel pressure to drop to 0 under 3/4 throttle. I bought dmax fan and clutch from another vendor----never engaged, trash from beginning, stick with Heath.

the Walbro pump is the FRB-5, which is rated @ aprox. 45GPH, flow thru on fail, and produces somewhere around 8 to 10 PSI IIRC. I use one for my veg. oil. You can purchase one from Vegpower for about a hundred bones.

Thats a good question, and basically the more volume you have the better, however one important detail is flow-thru-on-fail. If the pump does not do this, then the truck will stall and leave you stranded

I have a Heath HO pump on mine....my truck does not starve for fuel....ever.

The Walbro FRB-5 puts out almost double (the volume) my stock lift pump did and is suppsoed to top out @ 11 psi. I measured it at the t-handle drain and got almost 2 liters/minute compared to exactly 1 liter/minute for the stock pump.

As per Diesel Pro......

"The 92-93 electric supply pump works as a good OEM replacement.
Keep in mind that any pump with over 14 psi may cause problems."

Just figuered I'd pass that along.

And they all would be wrong; I have run my Heath h/o out of fuel on more than one occasion, and a 92-93 pump as well, that said I was hauling up grade WOT hauling 7x7x16 high sided trailer loaded to about 7,000#, once off grade and out of WOT the Heath did recover much quicker than a OEM pump does, I was power limited (lack of EGT rise) no more fuel feeding the beast, I didn't stall or sputter, I was just using all fuel available.

Is that Walbro FRB-5 pump a direct fit replacement type or is a little customization in order? I would have to imagine that this pump combined with FTB mod plus HP4 would be a good thing.

I have two questions about after market LP?

First, were can you purchase the walpro LP? I did some searching online and can only find links to people talking about it. Anybody have a link to a website of someone who sales it.

Second does anybody or has anybody run this type of lift pump?

Thanks!

You'll find the FRB-5 at vegpower.com
unfortunately, I won't be able to get one here myself : shipping is not affordable to my country ($271.00) :eek:10:
New Caledonia is a nice island, but so far from anything---
About the Holley, I'm still looking for someone who knows if it is a "flow on fails" one---

Some may but it is too much pump IMO, Walbro pumps are sold globally thru distributors here is one I found in a Yahoo search (check your spelling might have better search results), http://apeusa.com/?frpumps I suspect one of our vendors here may be able to get you one it flows on fail, not sure if one you ask about is, plus walbro is self regulating,

some have also theorized too much delivery 88 gph one you are showing could overwhelm the return circuit, you want more flow but don't want to overwhelm the system, which could airreate the tank via return circuit, and maybe heat fuel up with excess return flow back, in fuel delivery you want to size components to just over max flow you will require, hence the small IP inlet fittings and filter mgr outlet fittings GM gave us that "FTB mod" adresses. System GM gave us was to support 190 crank Hp, it marginally supports 200 rwhp.

the gm pump is 15 gph minimum to 23 gph "IIRC" max flow, FRB-5 is 45 gph, I'd be looking for something in a pump maybe no more than 2x flow of best a oem pump could do.

IP only needs 2 psi to be happy, to a point more gph and still maintain 2 psi is what you need to be looking at from what I've seen with mine

Thanks TD! TD, you dont have a son our daughter that got married this past spring/summer in germany do you?

Matuva,
If you ever come to Germany I could help with shipping since I have a US shipping address!

Well I opened my mouth so I better explain why.

My wife took picture of a couple from Mississippi here in Germany. Here is a link to her website. If it is not your kids than sorry to bother you.

Thanks, for the quick reply!
