98 6.5 injector pump replaced now hard to start

I replaced the IP and timing chain and gears on my 98 6.5F diesel, I have to hold down the peddle to the floor and crank it for about 30-45 secs before it starts. It acts like it is loading up but when it starts it runs great, blows a bit of black smoke at start up but not a lot im not sure if it can be fixed by computer timing at chevy dealership or if im off a tooth with the chain ? I checked and dbl checked the line up dots on gears but just not sure now. Any ideas would be a help thank you.

starter is fine it cranks good and fast, I cant find anything unplugged , new electric pump on frame rail. not sure what you mean by GP though ....

No one else has said it so i will. Air in the fuel line or airlocked in the IP. In that regard check all hoses especially the one you had disconnected to change the IP and make sure all the air is bled out. Only take one little bubble to make a paperwieght!!

PMD, grounds, gp=glow plug, do you have fuel at the time valve?

Why did you change the ip in the first place?

it gives some black smoke but not much and when driving down road it runs great and gives some black smoke when I step on it but clears right up.

the truck runs great on the high way just have to put peddle to floor to start the thing, I thought maybe the timing was off a bit but iv moved the IP back and forth side to side and does same thing no matter where it is.if I just turn the key at first it will try then just turn over and over till I put the peddle to the floor then it will fire up and some black smoke comes out and then clears up and runs like a raped ape lol.

my old IP was leaking fuel on the side of the IP after 40k miles on it then when putting new IP on I found the half moon key on cam shaft sheered off so replaced timing chain and gears and harm balancer as well.

Simple stuff first.

Replace the fuel return line coming out of the IP with a clear hose so you can see if there's Air bubbles coming out of the pump. If so trace system backwards and find where it is sucking air. Even if you don't see bubbles in the clear return line do the next step, you will have air in the lines just from replacing the IP:
With the engine running crack free the injector line nuts at the injectors one at a time and tighten them to bleed out any air they can be trapped in the injection lines.

After that maybe you need to reset the timing tdco.

Found the prob. The main connector on ip when I plugged it together some how I bent 2 of the prongs inside and it wasn't making good contact. took it in to dealer ship and tech found it when timing the ip with comp. He said as many times that I had it apart some thing like that was bound to happen lol. I had to order 3 ip's before I got 1 that was good seems all you can get is remained IP's for the 6.5 and some are not that good when bench tested, I finally got 1 from Buyautoparts.com out of Cali. So now I have replaced timing chain ,gears , all the censors including crank shaft position censor , glow plugs , relocated the PMD , added a new fuel filter on frame rail before pickup pump, changed all filters , new water pump , alternator , batteries , alternator wire to batteries " due to original 1 was broke almost in half " , changed trans filter and fluid at 135k going to change again here real soon. 175k on truck I think it should be good for another 200k ? Thanks to every 1 for there in put I think the 2k I spent is better then a monthly payment lol
