hey guys, its been a while since i have been around. i need to pick your brains.1. a friend has a 96 6.5td that died at the body shop and is puffing black smoke, he has reset the timing numerous times with the same result, 2. he has another 97 that will not fire at all and thinks it mite have something to do with the anti-theft system, ant ideas? im trying to keep him in a GM before he gets rid of all of them and gets a dodge or ford.

have you tried a diff PMD? also check out 88gmcs slow build thread I thinks that's the one that he has security issues

yes he has tried multiple pmd's that was my first question as well. that seems to be the #1 problem on these trucks. he has pulled them off well running trucks a used brand new ones as well.

just rechecking the timing marks on pump crank and cam as far as i know. he took it to a shop and they told him it was a tooth off, so he has reset it twice and had someone else reset it. i am coming in on the tail end of trying to get both his rigs up and running and im working on his wifes honda too. he can turn the pump all the way retard and it starts but runs real bad and no power anything less it wont start at all.

Do they know how to time his electronic DS4? With the scanner? that would be my first question. And have to know they are using a good scanner like Tech2, and not Snap-On.

The timing is done electronically, with the scanner, after positioning the IP. It may be that his Crank Position Sensor (CPS) is flipped 180 degrees if they have been removing the time cover, and the mounting tab broke off, or they replaced it for any reason. Need scanner data on timing.

Tell him not to trust mechanics with these, unless its a Stanadyne shop, or they demonstrate competence on 6.5 diesel EFI.
