Son spotted this pretty clean '96 2500 4wd truck w/ 6.5. It's a CA truck, so no rot. 189K miles. They're asking $4,600 for it.

Would this be a 599 or 506 block? If 506, weren't those early oil squirters experiencing cracking problems in the blocks? Would this be OBD I or II? Dash same as '95 or the later dashes?

Son has wanted a truck to back up his Burb. If this checks out, I'd offer $4,000 and we'd share use on it.

Clean looking truck. Should be OBDII. I believe 96 was the transition year to the 506 block with the oil squirters. I would say if it is the original motor either a 141 or a 506. Interior is the same as 95. No DRLS yet and I believe no passenger air bag doghouse.

Check the VIN # at a dealership and get the build sheet. Should show the month it left the factory. Mine was a January truck and had the 141 block. Nice score either way.

Shouldn't there be a way to tell when it was built from the VIN #? Where can I find the engine #? I was too busy to make it to the dealer when service was open yesterday.

From what I've read its not necessarily about when it was built but where. Some plants switched sooner than others. As far as engine numbers they are somewhat hard to see, you have the casting dots in the valley and IIRC there's also numbers cast in at the back of the block

Finally had the opportunity to stop by the dealer and their database only goes back to 2001. They would not be able to look up the block casting info. They said best bet would be to call GM (800) 222-1020.

I thiught a fair price would be $3,000, with a max of $3,500. I checked the value on Kelley Blue Book: Good condition: $3,600. Fair Condition: $3,200. Given the worn upholstery and the known stalling, $3,000 seems more than fair.

Called GM and spent a long time on the line. They could not tell me the engine block #. They don't have that info. They were able to tell me that the warranty started in May 1996, which is when it was sold. That would place the truck manufacturing date about two months earlier?

We do know the AC compressor is the long body style located on the driver's side with the alternator located on the passenger side.

AK, can you post pics of your t-stat housing? I personally have never seen a 96 with a single. we have 3 of them here, and all are duals with the HO pump, but NO factory K47. A buddy has a 96 C3500 Chassis cab with duals, HO WP, K47, whole ball of wax. also has a higher trim level with carpet and buckets in a reg. cab. :)

Must have made the change have way through the production year? My 96 had single stat and I believe it was the 141 block.

Pics. Yeah, this is the new motor but the Single T-Stat is OEM for my truck.
