I got a call from my Bro this afternoon. He was returning to the coast from Vernon BC on the Coquihalla (3rd phase). Stopped for a break on top and when he tried to re-start truck wouldn't even turn over. Just clicked. I asked him if he had run high temperature prior and he said gauge was about 100 or so where it always was... he has an 11 foot camper and his boat behind at the time so fairly heavy load...i think he blew a headgasket and the engine is hydro-locked? He says batteries seemed fine...and was going to pull some glow plugs to see if any coolant was there. Last time I spoke with him he was getting towed to Merritt. I am in Tacoma WA on business.. Any ideas?

Often times, a simple 'click' when turning the key could be the result of a loose battery cable.

I've had this happen... snugged the battery terminals, and it fired right up.

I agree with the above - sounds electrical. If it was hydrolocked, it should turn the engine a little, even. Check cables and such. Every once in a while in mine if the glow plug light comes on and goes out immediately, I know my cables are loose. Start at the batteries and work your way toward the starter.

Ill have to agree with everyone else as well. I the truck was running fine and just wouldnt start all the sudden its probably the starter or battery wires :frown2:

I agree with all of you. The passenger battery is always the culprit!! Stupid design by GM I say. I know I need to do a mod on mine, but have never done it yet. Anyone with good pics and a good description of what will cure this problem?

I'm thinking this will cost your brother a few bucks with the tow Steelydan. He may be kicking himself later.

I gotta disagree, guys. Then again, I have the benefit of having read the first post, over at the other place. Greaseball (Dan's brother) says he pulled some glowplugs on the driver's side to see if that would relieve the pressure... but nope.

The next day, after having it towed home and sitting all nite inthe driveway, he says he had a fair amount of coolant under the driver's side.

I think he's blown a headgasket. When he got to the top of the pass, he got out and shut the truck off to cool off... I think it superheated, took out the gasket, (or cracked something) and now he's leaking green stuff.

Anybody got a better thought? I would just love to be wrong about this one.

SteelyDan, I'll just let you continue this discussion here... your bro has posted over ont he other site, but he won't likely get a lot of help there... the experts are here.

Huh.. well everone with a 6.5 knows the head problems they have :frown2:

Tow was over $1000.00 total...my 2 nephews under 10yrs, my Sister in law, and a huge napoleotin mastiff...boat was towed to Merritt, truck towed home. Then the next day he had to drive back to Merritt 400kms roundtrip to pick-up his boat...I feel his pain...

When he called me I was in Tacoma WA, up to my A$$ in grease. My quick diagnosis was head gasket or crack as well. I called him yesterday and he thinks it's the starter. Anyway he had to get home some way, given the circumstances I would have done the same (towed)...He is a HS Principal so he's off for the summer. Lot's of time to repair I guess.
