95 6.5 starting problem

My 95 6.5 diesel has a starting problem where it belches smoke and sounds like it is hitting on on or two cylinders. Once it starts it's like something switches on and it runs great! It throws a code that it corrects in a few seconds and that code is 36. Injection Pulse Width Error (response time long)! Is this a death sentence for the pump? I have installed new glow plugs, new relay, new lift pump and a new D-Tech PMD behind the front bumper. It still does the same thing. Am considering removing the injectors and having them tested and also checking the voltage at the glow plugs, as the relay cycles properly. I've been pulling my hair out over this thing! :mad2: Any suggestions from anyone?

Tim, does it do it all the time, or only when the engine is cold?

If only when cold, try pulling the plug on your CTS (coolant temp sensor) when you next try a cold start - if it is not working, your IP won't advance properly when it is cold.

BTW - what kind of glow plugs?

well it starts doing it when it gets below 55 degrees and gets much worse as it gets colder, but I've also noticed that in real warm weather it cranks a little longer than it should if it has sat a while. It got down to 28 last night and it was about 45 when I tried to start it this AM and I had to plug it in for an hr. I put Delphi Glow Pugs in it, all eight ! Are they ok? I will try unplugging the CTS and see what happens tomorrow. That does make sense because you can tell when the timing changes and it runs perfect instantly !

Which Delphis? If you got the 60g's, they take a little longer to get to full temp. Your PCm is programmed for glow times with the 9g's in mind... they heated up much faster, but swelled and fried, too. The new glows are better, but the PCM doesn't glow them long enough.

Things to think about, if the above test (unplug CTS) proves out:

1] you can put a switch in the CTS line - when you flip the switch, it'll open the circuit, making the truck *think* the coolant temp is -40*, which will give you the maximum glow time and advance the PCM is programmed for. Once the truck starts and runs for a bit, close the switch again so the PCM 'sees' the real coolant temp.

2] If you are in colder temps, like me, you can do the Glowplug manual relay mod so you can manually control the glow time when you want to.

Both mods are found in the 6.5 tech section - other members have taken the time to write them up and include pictures. Good luck!

well fella's you won't believe it but I tried disconnecting the cts and nothing changed. Then I thought I really need to see how many volts are actually getting to the glow plugs so I had my wife come out and cycle it while I put a meter on the #1 cylinder and dang there wasn't anything there when she cycled it! I checked the new relay output and it was ok there, so I went back to the plug that fits on the glow plug and checked it with the meter grounded to the engine and it was good! I pulled the new Delphi glow plug and it was dead as hell and saturated with fuel. To make a long story short I pulled every one of the new plugs and only one would lite a test lite and that was about 50%! I checked my old plugs and they all tested ok so I put them in and wham!!!! Wala we ran like a million! I know the relay was bad and the lift pump wasn't quite right either, but I learned to always check new glow plugs before you install them !! These were HDS309 Delphi and the seller said they were the best plugs out there for the 6.5. I'm not an expert but he is getting these back and I surely can't recommend them. I thank all you guys for all your help and advice. I learned a lot messing with this and it about drove me nuts but at least I found the problem. What do you fellas recommend for new glow plugs. Any suggestions would be welcome !!
Thanks again!!
Tim

There really isn't any choice, here, in my opinion... either Delco AC60g or Bosch Duraterms.

I prefer the Bosch plugs... Bill Heath hooked one of 'em up to full power for hours, trying to burn it out. Nope. He tested (tortured?) a bunch of them that way, no issues. Then he put the set in his own truck AFTER all that, and they are still in there!

Either set is self-regulating, but here's the catch - both sets need to be glowed a bit longer, as I mentioned in my post above. If you have a GL4 chip, it does that automatically. Otherwise, try the CTS mod or, if you live up here, put in a manual control relay.

Gled you found your problem ... always look for simple stuff first.
