ok since there appears to be so much more knowledge over here, has anyone delt with the 4x4 actuator issue with these trucks? everytime i lock my truck in 4x4 it blows a fuze, i replaced the actuator inside the front diffrerential, $120 and it still blows a fuze, i checked the wiring as good as i could without ripping it all loose and un sheathing it. it looked good to me. is there something else anybody has come across with this issue that mite help me figure it out. soon the snow will be gone, so i wont have to maually lock it in for a long period of time, but i do live in the country, and like most of you im sure, i need 4x4 from time to time.

well dang, i guess when i find out i will let you know. i do know of a buddy that had the same issue, he had another guy wire up a bunch of relays and a couple toggle switches and stuff but i want to avoid that, i dont want to stray from factory on that, unless absolutely the last resort. although the way they did it, it has separate low range in 4wd and 2wd so that wouldnt be so bad. i need to check into it, i just dont want to litter my dash with a bunch of holes and extra wiring. looks hoakie and unprofessional. maybe 15-20 years ago. id rather do it properly nowadays.

Yeah i understand that. Ill be working on mine this next week or so when i get moved into my new shop. Lets hope thi stays at a cheap fix

what really sux, that was the last thing i had "to fix" before i started doing my up grades and add ons. before i lost the engine from oil line working loose and loosing a rod. i was that close =

you know how to "rig" it to have 4x4 if you really need it? remove the actuator and install something a little bit smaller diameter (lug nut or two) then reinstall the actuator. it will push the pin into place giving you 4x4, but it will be full time lock in, kinda like a straight axle with lockouts locked in all the time. i had mine like that for a month straight, it isnt rite, but it got me around. you can put the shifter in 2high when you dont need it but the front axle will remain locked in. then throw the shifter in 4low or 4 high when you need it. aint a gud fix but it works. for temporary anyway. besides that it helps lube those front axle parts.

Yeah I dont need it right now. Just had a buddy stuck in the mudd yesterday and went to put in 4 and it wouldnt work. looked and blew a fuse. So when i get some spare time i will fix it i hope.

thats just the way the ball bounces sometimes. my driveway is virtually impossible to get out of when we get more than a couple inches of snow. seems like ive had that much since christmas. my truck is almost worthless in 2wd, empty anyway. if i load it down it does ok, crew cab dually just have no weight in back end too long. for that, i love it every other way. it is a catchall back there tho. glad i only have the one kid rite now.

The transfer case switch could be shorting out or insulation rubbed through. The ecm also gets a signal from the transfer case switch to change shift pattern for low range.

As bk said, check the switch on the top of the transfer case. There is not that much wiring to chase if there is a wiring issue.
