Hi Guys. I have several different problems going on right now and was hoping for some ideas and trouble shooting on it.
1. Speedometer works sometimes. When I bought the truck the speedometer was not working. We took it in to have it fixed and the mechanic was having a hell of a time finding the problem. Turns out there was a ground problem in the drivers door window switch. Also the VSS buffer module was off a bit so they had to add an ‘electronic ratio adapter’ and now it works some of the time. When I drive on the freeway the speed will jump so if I am going 65 the speedometer will read 80. If I come to a stop but do not shut down the motor the speedometer will start working again for a bit. Then it will start reading high again. I only notice it when on the open highway.
2. I loose my turbo boost. I first noticed it when I was towing my boat on a vacation. The service engine soon (SES) light turned on and off on the way up and the code was for the Wastegate Solenoid. I was able to find one in the town where we were boating and replaced it. Now the SES light is not coming on but I am still loosing the turbo boost. It seems to work fine but when I hit 7 PSI it suddenly drops to 0 and never comes back till the engine sits for several hours. Also found that over time when on the open highway the turbo will loose boost without ever hitting 7 PSI.
3. I loose my chip. I have a 4-position tune on a switch. Normally when I go from economy to performance you can feel the performance increase. But when the chip stops working nothing happens when switched between positions.
4. I lent the truck to my wife’s girlfriend so she could deliver stuff to her work and on her way home from our house it shut down on her on the freeway. She said it started right up after she came to a stop on the side of the road. On my way home from picking up co-workers at the airport it sputtered twice and died. The first sputter happened when we were coasting to a stoplight. The second sputter happened about a mile down the road when we were taking off from a red light. The complete shut down happened when I pulled into my co-workers driveway. It started right up and ran the two blocks to my house. Have not driven it since.

buddy tune
4” exhaust
3” down pipe
HO water pump
New injectors ~3000 miles
Relocated PMD
ATT (not installed yet)
Oil cooler with stainless steal hoses (not installed yet)

- What fuel are you using? (#1 Diesel, #2 Diesel, Bio, VO, WVO, etc) Diesel #2
- What fuel additives are you using? Every few months SAE 30ND and also some Diesel Kleen when I head out on long road trips.
- Where are you located? Southern California, Orange County
General maintenance: inspect and evaluate the condition of each. When were they last changed?
- Air filter ~5000 miles
- Fuel filter I think I replaced it when I bought the truck ~5000 miles ago.
- CDR Valve? Not sure.
- Coolant – Flushed ~5000 miles ago
- Oil – Regular. Change every 3000 miles
- Batteries – charged but look old. Not sure of the age(s)
- Battery cables and grounds (removed, cleaned and tightened): I think that they all need to be cleaned or replaced. Was planning on removing them all when the turbo/oil cooler installed.
- Glow Plugs - how many miles on them? New ~5000 miles
What type? Bosh
- Injectors - last changed at ~ 5000 miles
History: (Describe how the problem first appeared.)
- What were you doing when it happened? All kinds of driving.
- How was the truck running fine before this problem appeared?
- Has this problem ever happened before? Just stated.
- Describe any related factors that might be part of the problem. Non that I can think of.
- Have you checked for DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes)? (Y.N) Yes, non since the replaced wastegate solenoid. And?
Diagnostics:
1] Starting:
1a] Does the engine start? Yes
1b] Does the engine crank over? Yes
1c] Are your batteries fully charged? Yes
1d] Have you removed, cleaned, and tightened all battery connections? No
1e] Does your Wait to Start light come on for a time? How long? No
1f] Does your glow plug light come on? Yes For how long? Depends on the outside temperature
1g] Do you see smoke from the exhaust while cranking? What color? None
1h] Does the Service Engine Light Glow during Start/bulb check? Only when the rest of the lights turn on when the key is first turned on.
2] Fuel Issues (if not running):
2a] Can you hear your lift pump working? Yes
2b] Do you get a steady flow of fuel from the water drain (T-handle)? Yes
2c] Loosen the inlet line from the IP – is fuel coming out (Lift Pump on)? Yes
2d] Loosen an injector line and crank the engine - does fuel come out? Yes
2e] Do you hear a vacuum (hiss) when you remove the fuel cap? I did but replaced the cap and not so much now.
3] PMD / IP Issues
3a] Location of PMD (on pump, on intake, remote mounted) Behind the front bumper.
3b] Condition of Extension harness (if used) Vendor or Homemade? Visual inspection the cables look ok. But they are dirty.
3c] Condition of grounds / ground wires to IP / PMD. Check Harness. On a visual inspection the wires look ok. But I have not taken the cables off and inspected the ends.
3d] PMD Make: Not sure
3e] PMD Age: Not sure
4] Stalling Issues
4a] Do you experience stalling only when hot? Yes
4b] Does it stall under particular circumstances? (ie hit bump, or on accel) Stopping
4c] Does pouring cool water over the IP seem to help with restarting? Not sure
4d] Is stalling momentary (engine recovers)? Yes
4e] Does SES light come on when engine hiccups? No
4f] Does cruise control quit working when engine hiccups? Not sure. Not using the cruse control when it happened.
4g] Does re-starting seem to reset engine, restoring cruise and power? Not sure
4h] Changes to dash lights or instruments during stalling events? Acts just the same as when you turn the key on and don’t start the engine.
5] Running Issues
5a] On cold start, does upper rad hose get hard before engine warms up? Not sure. Don’t think so.
5b] Any bubbles or oil film in coolant overflow tank? No
5c] Any white slime on oil surfaces (dipstick, CDR, oil Fill cap)? No
5d] Excessive white smoke from exhaust on cold start? No. No smoke, white or black. Only time I get black smoke is when I loose the turbo pressure and I step on it. Then it looks like I have a coal-fired engine under the hood.
5e] Excessive black smoke from exhaust under hard acceleration? Yes. When the turbo goes out.
6] Performance Issues
6a] Do you have gauges (boost, EGT) ? Yes
6b] Maximum boost under load? 7 PSI then it goes right to 0.
6c] Have you added a performance PCM (reflash) or Chip? Yes. Buddy turn that worked flawless on the 95 burb for two years.
6d] Have you changed exhaust / downpipe / crossover? Added the 3” down pipe, 4” exhaust, and cross over pipe when I bought it ~5000 miles ago.
6e] Wastegate – mechanical or vacuum (OEM)? Vacuum. That’s what the ATT is for! Hope it will help clear out the turbo problem.
7] Temperature-related Issues:
7a] Single or dual thermostats? Single
7b] Have you replaced them lately? Manufacturer of replacements? ~5000 miles ago. AC Delco
7c] Have you pulled and cleaned Radiator and coolers lately? No

List and describe any other factors which are not addressed in this checklist. We can’t see, hear, smell, or touch your truck, so the more descriptive information you can give, the more likely it is that somebody can assist you.
I think that just about covers it. No weird smells or any unnatural things that are any different then the 95 or Big T’s 99 that I have not already said.a
