I'm hoping someone can help me figure out what this noise is?

I tried cracking all the injector lines one @ a time & though the noise changed a bit it never went away or siginificantly reduced in volume. Most all of them did however create a miss so they are all firing decently well at least.

It's worse when cold & seems to get a little better when warm (vid was taken when warm) and is very consistant. Engine idles pretty smooth, starts pretty easily, revs up well, doesn't seem to miss (haven't went for a ride anywhere yet though) and doesn't seem to smoke anything but black. I was told it does have a fuel chip & PMD mod as well as a replacement injector pump done previous to this issue. The smoke coming from the hood is out of the CDR hole in the valve pan since the CDR isn't currently installed.

I got this truck in pc's & just got it back together - the fella I bought it from said he was pulling the Great Divide on the way to the east coast with a U-haul trailer behind the truck when it overheated on him. He then pulled over & shut it down without letting it cool off first. After restarting it had this noise (he did not confirm it's the same noise since he's no longer around, but I gotta assume it is). He drove the truck the rest of the way here with the trailer AND drove it around here for 3 months with the noise before taking it to a garage. The garage tore off the intake & valve covers & when they didn't find anything there told him he needed a new engine (Less than impressive diagnosis) & that's when I bought it.

Thanks!

Less than impressive diagnosis... Actually they are pretty close. That amount of blowby is from overheated rings that lost their tension. After you fix it there are several cooling threads on here starting with a HO water pump, new fan clutch and 9 blade fan/dmax fan and clean the cooling stack esp behind the oil coolers.

They pulled the valve covers looking for a broken nylon button and pushrod that can fall off. The engine pictured in my avatar was running with a miss and knock.

Sounds like the engine is eating a foreign object most likely a broken off glow plug. Second is a scuffed and cracked/broken piston.

I would check the harmonic balancer on the engine as well as the rubber for the pulleys on the crank. Then torque converter bolts and look for a cracked or broken flexplate.

Someone put a baseball card in your spokes?:hihi:

Nice truck looks exactly like my old 93 except mine was 2wd.

Noise sounded like bottom end til you reved it then like a lifter or ??
