so my 93 with 275k+ miles has been running great with no problems since ive had it. last fri I go to head to work and truck wont start. found out my guage is off by 1/4 tank so it was out of fuel. put 5 gallons in that afternoon, cranked it up and went straight to the store and filled up. added my lucas fuel treatment and went on my way. truck ran great until Tuesday and then Tuesday morning it wouldn't start and acts exactly like it did when it was out of fuel. haven't had a chance to look at it yet but was leaning towards trash plugging up something in the fuel system from running out. I thought I had read a thread on here with a checklist for when your 6.5 doesn't start and ive searched the site but my searching skills suck and I cant seem to find it now. im not familiar with diesels yet and I know the fuel system is different so was looking for a little direction to start in if yall could help a brother out.

I thought so too but I cant find it. ill keep looking though. I did pull the filter out and it didn't look that dirty but im going to start there anyways.

man that's it. I was overlooking that because I didn't want to fill out a form but I don't have to fill it out. anyways thanks.

I am not sure on a 93, but on mine (95), it does not like to run out of fuel.
It will introduce air in the fuel system and then it is hard to start.
I know it is not much help with this statement but it can be useful for future reference.
The gauge in this truck is not accurate, so 1/4 may be less.

Start with the basics. Jumper the lift pump and Run about 1/2 gallon out the drain T into a container. I use a gallon pickle jar.

Let the fuel sit 20 minutes or so and look for water bubbles on the bottom.

Note the condition of the fuel and the flow rate - how long it takes to pump 1/2 gallon.

I think leroys lift pump relay upgrade will work on a 93 - verify that.

Use an AC Delco lift pump for a 93 if it needs to be replaced.

Pull the injection pump return line and run it to a container. Turn the key to run and jumper the lift pump. You should get a trickle out of the return line.

If the lift pump is running and you have low flow or No flow. Do not immediately condemn the lift pump.

Remove the lift pump and try pumping from container to container. If that works, then your problem probably lies between the lift pump and the fuel

well my truck doesn't have a t handle the drain hose is just cut off with a bolt stuck in the end. I took the bolt out and jumpered the lift pump and got nothing. then I cranked it over a while with the key and still nothing. I guess I need to make sure im actually getting 12v to the pump down at the pump to make sure its not a broken wire or something. looking down into the fuel manager I can see some little pieces of trash in the bottom.

While you are at it, I would change all the fuel lines and install a T for a fuel pressure gauge while you're at it.

The kit from Flying J for the Feed the Beast mod is something like $80 or so. You could do the IP now and do the FFM later if you ever decided you wanted to.

I have made long jumpers for the lift pump to go right to the lift pump plug.

How did you jumper the lift pump? through the fuse?
One side sends hot to the lift pump and the other does not.

You can have 12 volts at the lift pump and still not have it run. If you have a weak wire or bad connection, you can read the volts, but there won't be enough amps to run the pump sometimes

Also load test your batteries

figured out my lift pump isn't getting enough juice. i jumped a wire from the battery to the "G" port under the dash. I need to see how its supposed to be wired up because its all rigged up now and one of the hot wires going to it was split off and was zip tied to the firewall so I don't know what that's about. I hope it hasn't been off the whole time ive owned the truck and now my injection pump is bad. somebody that had no business under the hood of a vehicle got a hold of this truck before i got it.

so i pulled the lift pump and when i put the white wire to 12v and black to ground it goes to vibrating. ill make sure it actually pumps fluid before i put it back in. its a precision fuel pumps p61699s. it also says 13j18b on it. getting fuel from tank no doubt and lp works so its upstream from there. when i was having starting problems a little while back we unhooked a bunch of wiring and some of it was the lp wiring so it hasn't been working for a few weeks now. also when i cleaned out the fuel filter manager there was all kinds of junk in the bottom of it. i need to pull the little filter at the ip and see if its clogged.

lp relay is all messed up. im assuming the factory wires aren't good because someone ran separate wires straight from a relay up near the driver side battery to the lp. there is a wire cut off and hanging coming from the tank side of the factory wiring harness near the lp i don't know what it goes to or really what color it is. i think black but i didn't make sure.

so my stock wiring has been all hacked up and I don't have many of the stock connectors anymore. I wired a lift pump relay in, changed the fuel filter and purged air a few times and it fired up. runs much much better with a lift pump!
