93 GMC 2500, 6.5 fuel line issue.

Hi guys, Recently found the forum. Looks like a lot of very good info here so I plan to be around a bit longer.

But I'll start with my first post. It may not go over very well with the guys that have been here longer, but I did "do a search" before this. My search terms were probably not the best, but I tried.

So here goes.

My LP went bad so I replaced it with a new one. Of course the lines were rusty especially where they go through the rubber block that comes off the frame forward of the pump. Well the pump went in OK, luckily the threads were somewhat clean from the previous pump replacement a couple years ago. So things looked good. No leaks, truck runs good life is great!

My first drive and when I get home I see the drip. The return line is leaking at the rust in the line with the rubber (plastic) block. So I need the truck now. Can I cut the rubber hose in front of the leak and put in a hose barb? Then as a temporary fix cut the hard line on the other end and use fuel hose between the two?

Also what is the suggested fuel line fix for the actual repair? I see that Leroy has fittings and hose. I like that idea. Is that a good permanent replacement? It would take time for shipping and as I said I need the truck. Is there off the shelf parts that I can cobble up to replace my line with hose?

Thanks, sorry for the fuel line question. I'm sure it has been discussed before. I got 8 pages back in the forum looking. But I am easily distracted. I kept finding so much information on these 6.5's that I just kept reading, but not finding much on fuel lines.

First, Welcome.

Second, people that say "use the search" should search it and post a link for the new guy, we all hate asking for help, thats why we find new forums. Congrats- you found the best one out there.

Third, if the lines are rusty plan on replacing them long term. Yes you can cut the metal lines and just run rubber fuel line. If you are 100% sure it will get done in a year, then buy the cheap stuff for the patch job.

The best rubber line for long term is sae30r9.

On the lift pump replacement, consider the next time upgrading to a gear driven pump. They are a more expensive investment, but pay for themselves long term. The new LP should buy you a couple years to figure which flavor you like.

Also adding a fuel pressure gauge tapped before injector pump is a wise thing.

There does seem to be a lot of good help on these pages. I'll keep looking back in them as I get time to research.

I do plan on doing a "real" repair soon, but right now I'm in a time crunch with winter coming on. So I need a temp fix. I had a couple concerns which led to my post. I figured that the pump out was only at what 15 psi? So it should be OK with fuel line. But the return I did not know, after the IP would have higher pressure on the return. Didn't seem like it should be too high pressure, but I've been wrong before.

Are the OEM fuel line fittings any "special" thread? Fittings available locally?

The lift pump was a tough one to take. The one that went out was only about 1 year old, maybe a bit longer but less than 2. It was a Airtex E3158 that I thought was an OK replacement pump. So this time I went with a Delphi FD0009. Hopefully it lasts longer. They are almost double the price of Rockauto when you have to buy them locally.

I also did the OPS relay this time when I changed the pump. I did my harness a little different from what I have read. Rather than cut and splice wires. I found a connector on the firewall that went to the LP. I made my harness so that I unplug the OEM connector and plug my harness into each side of it. Then from there to my relay. No splices and easy to take the relay out of line for any reason.

A fuel pressure gauge is a very good suggestion.

Gear driven pump will be on the to do list.


I've never in my life been as busy as I have since I retired! How did I ever have time for a job?

stock LP is only about 5-8 psi and unless you have a restriction the return should be basically 0. Stock LP does have special threads
