93 6.5TD needs a Rear main seal.

Never saw the one piece ones. I assume the tranny and flywheel have to come off ? Does the main caps have to be pulled ? My buddy thinks he has a leaky one. I'm gonna steam it good before condeming it. The only good thing is the truck has a 6 inch suspension lift and it looks like the oil pan can be removed without jacking the motor or lowering the diff. I have never done one. Is there a two piece repair one available ? I know last I looked at the truck the PO did a really horrible snot job on the pan gasket, so I am hoping that is the leak.
 
no 2 piece kit if it's auto you might be able to pull the flywheel and torque convetor and have enough room maybe. also there is a special tool to seat it the right depth they come up pretty regular on ebay. can be done without it
 
Tranny has to come off. You need a special seal installer to set the seal at the correct depth. Check CDR valve. It could have too much crankcase pressure causing it to blow out of the easiest place to get out. I can get you a pic of the installer if you need one along with the kent-moore number. They look to be a bitch to get out without dinging the seal surface on the crank. Rear main cap may have to come out.
 
On my 93 4x4. Removed trans/tcase, flex plate. No need to remove oil pan or main cap. I just "eyeballed" the depth of new seal. Never leaked again as long as I owned it anyway.
Good time to R&R trans mount, ujoints, rear trans/tcase seal.
I would also unbolt the switch thingy I thinks it called multi position switch?? The one that tells computer what gear its in.
I've had problems unpluging the connector before and broke it. They can be brittle and very hard to unplug.

Edit: just snapped you have a stick shift so the switch won't apply to you.
 
yep, just not sure how heavy a nv4500 is but I would assyume heavier than an sm465 which is pretty darn heavy. I have the install tool, just to date have never needed it...:D . Of all the ones I have owned with stupid mileage on them both 6.5 and 6.2 I don't think i ever had one leak.
 
nv4500 Is heavy.. maybe 200lbs

:thumbsup: Yup. Very heavy - almost 200 pounds. If you're talking transfer case attached, total weight hits around 270#. Not something you want to get away form you under the truck. :eek: A tranny jack would be a real help in keeping that much weight steady. If you're gonna use a floor jack, a second set of hands can be a real finger-saver.

Removing the seal isn't a big deal. You can use a hooked seal puller (Auto Zone, Pip Boyz, etc) or you can drill a 3/16" hole in the seal, screw in a self-threading sheet metal screw and then use a screw driver to pry on the screw head and force the seal out. It works and you never touch the machine surface of the crankshaft. :agreed:
 
:thumbsup: Man, I get that. Here in east Tx, we usually have pretty mild winters - freezing temps at night, but usually in the 50's during the day. This winter, we've consistently had daytime temps in the 20's! :eek: :eek: Way too darn cold to be working on the carport. :nonod:

ITs about time you boys get to feel our pain!!!! Now picture your backyards with 3-4' of frozen snow, and trenches everywhere to get to the mailbox and the shed. Its like we all live on the moon, and had to carve ourselves out a spot to live in! The downside is 2 lane roads are down to 1 and a 1/2, and you can't see boo turning out onto the main streets due to the huge snowbanks which are now UGLY ASS grey and brown due to the salt and sand and slight melting.

Don't even bring up the havoc this reeks on roofs, where the heat melts the snow just enough to refreeze overnight creating huge ice dams covering the gutters and anywhere else there is snow.

Tell me about it. I spent 8 hrs with an air hammer breaking the ice out of my gutters for the big thaw next week.
 
My house is colder than that when I wake up!!! :)

My mother-in-law used to leave the windows open at night, even in the winter. You'd wake up in the morning and there's be ice on the glass of water by the bed. Seemed kinda neat when I was in my 20's and 30's. Now, if it's below 60, I better be standing in bright sunlight. My fingers no longer work that great when they're cold.

You young whippersnappers are welcome to play in the snow all you want. When you come to your senses, we still have plenty of cheap land down here in Texas. Plus, our women are a lot cuter! :thumbsup: :thumbsup: :thumbsup:
