I got a 93 6.5 and it runs warm towards the hot side....I makes 14psi boost if jumped on HARD, but usually 10 or less....My EGT's run at around 500degrees crusing 55 or 60, and the pump was supossedly turned up but it dont smoke alot...My question is, WHY does the block temp go from about 190 to around 210 when the turbo spools up??? I was pulling about 4,000lbs behind it with the OD off, and it was running a steady 210(maybe a smidge more)....Drove home today no load with OD on and ran steady low block temp UNTIL the turbo spools in......I get more than 2psi boost and it starts running up hot QUICK....Why??? any thoughts? Im thinking bigger down pipe and bigger exhaust?

Under load it is obviously going to get hotter. Does the system hold pressure? if not find out why, it will run cooler under pressure.
Stuck Thermostat??

When i got my '93 i cleaned out the radiator, A/C and other coolers really good. Very important to do that. Also i use a 180F thermostat robertshaw i think and that works well. The other addition to cooling is i use a HD fan clutch and a d-max fan blade setup which made a huge difference in cooling. I think i got it at SSD, several vendors have that setup.

I'd bet the thermostat isn't a ac delco or robertshaw. The radiator does need to be taken out of the truck to be cleaned. You will be suprised how much dirt they hold. A 9 blade steel fan is easily available at junkyards for $30 + or - .

Good info, guys...

Do the cheap stuff first:

- pull the rad and clean it; get all the dirt/rocks/bugs out. You can't properly without taking it out.

While it's out:

- change to a genuine ACDelco T-stat (RobertShaw works too, as does Sterling). NO Stant, Napa, Motocraft, etc!!)
- clean the little thermocoil on the front of your fan clutch. Make sure no dirt/oil are left on it. You may want to do the Fan-clutch mod that is found in the 6.5 Technical Reference Library.

Put it all back together with distilled water, new coolant, and a few bottles of Redline Water-wetter.

If that doesn't help, you might need to go to a HO water pump, but I bet that'll do it.

I agree with some of the above.

Owning a 1993 and towing at 14 PSI boost...

Remove the radiator and throw it away. Likely the original and plugged solid inside - white corrosion on the tube ends you can see with lowered coolant level.

Remove the grille and then pull the oil cooler. Remove the mat of junk.

Check the fan clutch. If it is covered in a oil like substance it is the original clutch and way past it's best if used by date of 5 years old. Replace it with a heavy duty clutch. Towing all the time I would recommend a 180 t- stat and a lower temp kick on fan clutch. Get a 9 blade 20" steel or 21" duramax fan. Yes, the 1993 6 blade fan is an oddball 6 bolt pattern: get rid of it and it's clutch.

I also have a HO water pump. (Kennedy low turn on clutch, 9 blade 20" fan, 180 t-stat, new radiator, new condenser, and water wetter.) With that I do not get over 210 no matter what I am doing to it with the AC on. I usually have it floored pulling the 24' trailer. Like floored for over 20 min at at time...

Yes the fan roars a lot. But it kicks in and out as expected. I will take fan noise for keeping temps below critical while working hard.

Uhm I cant say for sure what the radiator or Tstat is...The truck hit a deer a year or so before I got it and its got a new or used Oil cooler, and prolly radiator(if u see how mangled some of the stuff looks like it was and then straightened).....I dont hear the fan because of the stacks(ive never heard the fan on my 94).....I was told its a brand new T stat 195 BUT cant prove it.... this motor has a heck of a time holding temp on a chilly morning..It also supposedly has 2 new(used rebuilt) heads cause they cracked the old ones....hmm im betting now that the fan aint working......ive washed the radiator*from the outside, and it helped...it got the temps down to 210 or less.....before shed run up to 220 230............Yes i knew that was bad so I got EGT and boost gauges to find out what it was doing.....are my EGt's normal?? It was running almost 900 crusing 55mph on a 70 degree day with the OD off......BUT that was with a 4K trailer behind it.....But anyways...I can get the ideas from you all, but till I get my dodge fixed I cant touch the 93.....It works and the dodge dont so dont wanna screw it up.....

My EGT's with about 20k behind me doing 60-65 mph in OD are about 800 +/-. Depends on wind.

Hmmmm, then my radiator and fan arent working together.......or the t stat is bad......ill look into it when i get the cummins fixed....thanks guys!!!

If the fan engages you know it. Its almost as obvious as your truck stalling out.......

Do the Fan clutch mod if its viscous'ness is still intact.

For cheap money can't hurt to toss in a new T-Stat.

FWIW lower T-Stats don't help in anyway from overheating, result in greater temp swings in the block when its called to hard work duty, and people report 1mpg better running the 190 t-stats.
