I got the dubious pleasure to try to solve exessive gas consumption and misses on this thinge mejingy truck.
I'm a diesel guy and don't really like to work on these gassers.but...

here goes.

Truck uses way to much fuel and runs rough at idle(smokes too)

i replaced the sparks, cables ,rotor and distributor. this made the engine runs smoother at higher RPM,it responds fast and runs fine but still a strong smell of unburned fuel and smoke.

At idle it runs rough, unplugging a T-ed of vac hose at the right side front bottom of the carb raises the idle to fast an the engine runs perfect but still smokes.
I got a manual for it but it has nothing about the carb in it,not even where and how to trouble shoot or adjust(as usuall these haynes manuals it never tells a guy what he needs to know):rolleyes5:

All vac lines are connected as per pic in the manual for the year and model.
I took the top of the carb off and the valve and float are OK,fuel level seems fine.
Choke is converted to manual and works fine, truck starts OK as well.
2 barrel carb.

There are so many little gadgets and hoses on this carb it aint funny.

Where do i look for the exessive fuel burning??

It probably is too old to have an oxygen sensor in an exhaust manifold. My 88 dodge had one go bad and my mileage was as bad as 3 mpg.

Symptoms were similar.

22r is a very simple reliable engine. Other than Headgaskets not much goes wrong with it. Have to checked the valve adj ? It has mechanical valve train and the valves should be adjusted with every tune up. The spec should be on a the hood somewhere. I forget if the engine has to be hot or cold but it will say that with the spec. It's very easy to do as it's overhead cam. Once that is good to go, you may just want to have the carb rebuilt. You can block the egr off. it's useless on those.

I can't even find the EGR,musta been deleted allready.
The basic engine might be simple( all engines are) but the carb is about as simple as the space shuttle;)

Will do valves, and prob replace the carb.

Bison, AAP, auxillary accelerator pump. It's a diaphragm thing that will rot and fail. Get a rebuild kit at NAPA for around $50 (U.S.)...

Pull the vacuum line and check for raw fuel. I heard of guys blocking this line but the engine will probably be a PITA cold.

Choke flapper stuck shut some?

3500gmc,now we're cookin!
I was yesterday eyeballing that AAP as you call it,i pulled the hose off and there was some fuel in the line.now that points to a failed diaphram doesn't it(i didn't know it was there).
With that hose disconnected the RPM's shot up but the engine ran better.
I'll try blocking it off,see how it goes, otherwise a kit or a rebuild carb.

Choke is fine

Thanks

.....now that points to a failed diaphram doesn't it(i didn't know it was there).....

It's a long shot from here. Been worked over by carbureted machines since birth it seems. I've run across this in the past. Hopefully you can get the thing out of your driveway :D.

The ole Holley carbs have this 'power valve' (slightly different) that likes to go south every now and then, about the same result. Crappy fuel economy.
