Could a 6.6 be adapted to use 6.5 IP and injection system? Since the 6.2/6.5 blocks are so well made.... If a 6.6 can be cooled and handle more boost, by running simple 6.5 injection stuff on a 6.6 you would have durability and simplicity. Plus by the time you buy a used 6.5 or parts to build a 6.5 you could pickup a 6.6 long block for about the same price. Just a thought...... What do you guys think?

Fermanator posted a link to a Modified Dmax but it wasn' a 6.5 INj system. It's alot of work andi would question the reliabilty of it.

From what I've seen ,used running duramax engines don't go cheap. $6000+ around here with near 200,000 miles, if you can find one. Then you'd have to adapt the heads to mechanical injectors. It would end up costing as much as a new optimiser and have 200k on it. Buying a wreck for a donor would be better imo
By swapping in all the duramax electronics you also get the unlimited tuneability.

I thought about a Dmax swap for the Blazer project but, the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ for a complete rig that had an intact front end was just wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy off the scale of what I can/could afford.

Doing a mechanical injection swap although possible would be "as mentioned" extremely costly.

The overall tuneability with the mechanical IP is just not there either.

As much as I like the mechanical injection for its reliability under the worst of conditions the DMAX electronics is nothing short of amazing as far as what it can do.

If you want to go mechanical injection, buy an optimizer 6500 or a P400 and call it a day.

These new 6.5 incarnations are the real deal and will serve well without all the hastle of the old crap.

I love the look of my 22's! It has taken some time to sort out this truck as the previous owner beat the crap out of her. I bad to replace the entire front suspension brakes driveshafts (both end up being bent). It all started with failed PMD and then injectors, glow plugs and a year later a new IP. I am curious but it seems the alternator bracket flexs and vibrates too much I replaced the alternator with a Autozone replacement with the wrong 'size pulley, been wanting to take it to an alternator shop and have them spin it on their machine to see if it is out of balance on not. The ride is a little more sports car like, the stock 16's had a max weight if 1600+ each tire and these 22's are rated at 2600+. So I suspect the stronger construction of the tire causes the slightly firmer ride.

I hear you on the $$$$$$ of these things. I just read the post on your truck and feel sick to the stomach after doing all that work, so it just got me thinking. A buddy of mine does maintenance for a large company and they have a 04 Duramax with 200K that I might be able to pick up for around 2K. The truck has had a problem because they had a auxiliary fuel tank and my buddy suspects an air leak in the system between the second tank and the lift pump.
My motor is running good but if I can pickup this truck for that price a engine swap would be in order. Money doesn't come easy anymore with our economy and smart spending is the key! If I can keep the 6.5 running that is the plan but it has 200K on her. I would not want to spend money on a engine only to have it show and little bastard problem after back in the truck.

If you can grab an LB7 for 2 grand and it's in decent shape, do it!

Do it now!

While decent service can be had from a 6.5 (mine has over 350,000 kms by now), it can't compare to what can be done with the dmax's.

With an LB7 you can grab a roadrunner "guts kit" from moates.net for around 500 bucks, buy TunercatII from them for 280 bucks and be able tune the LB7 on the fly (real time tuning) and also tune an unlimited numbers of vehicles (tunercat II is not limited by vin licensing, you just need the proper vdf). Or, buy EFILive (which supports RR natively) which is more "user friendly" and tune from there.

All this and enjoying Dmax reliability, tunability, power and streetability. Not to mention the allison transmission.

It won't be an easy swap (electronics and a bit of fabbing) but Ferm seems to think it's worthwhile, judging by the nature of his posts.

However, with 200K you may have some maintenance issues to take care of first (injectors, etc).

If you really like the truck you have now, I'd think it would be worthwhile to deal with the swap hassles.

Esspecially if you can grab a complete dmax donor truck for 2 grand.

(that's just and unbelievably cheap price for where I live)

Oh yeah, about the dmax/6.5 hybrid thing:

Don't.

That would have to be 20 times the hassle it would be to just swap in the complete Dmax/e;lectronics/allison combo.

If it could be done at all.....

That is the tractor that had the 6.5 with dual pumps in it.

Nope, they still have the 6.5 with twin pumps. They built this one as they said they had reached the end of what the 6.5 could do and wanted more. There is a video on YOUTUBE of both the 6.5 twin and the DURAMAX tractor on the same trailer.

Would be great to get a hold of this guy and get his inputs here.
