Hi. i just purchased a 1997 6.5 s code 1500. the guy threw a new motor in it recently and its an f code but he decided to put the full egr system back on.... everything is still 1997 but the motor. the truck is running just below 210 and sometimes on 210. but with a trailer on it doesn't go past 210. im just worried that it could hurt the motor which is new. just alot of things that i need to consider about the temp. help!! If it helps i dont hear the fan clutch kick in. did they have that on s codes? any input is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to TTS.

The factory gauge may not be accurate as it doesn't get worse with a load. An infrared temp gun would give you a second guess on the temps. A Tstat change might also fix any problem. AC Delco is the best one to go with.

Search for "Fan clutch mod" on here, it will help it to kick in earlier.

Check/Clean your stack......Rad, Conden, Oil Cooler(s), etc.

The short version is never clear to new folks. You have to pull the grill and separate the oil cooler from the condenser and remove the mat built up between them. Pulling the radiator for a external clean up is also helpful. Scrubbing bubbles or a rad shop for cleaning. Debris plugs up the external fins. Then internal condition is also suspect on an old truck.

As said above make sure you really have an issue first.

Fan clutches only last 5 years before they loose enough RPM to be junk. (200 RPM lost per year.)
