So changed out my ip because of a miss at idle and now when i get it up around 3000 rpm it cuts out and puts out white smoke. When i first put it on it would do the same thing around 1500 to 2000 rpm. I adjusted the advance on the side of the pump so it wouldnt move until about half throttle and that cleared the smoke up until about 3000. Other than that it runs great. I can run it at full throttle and it runs great until it gets around 3000. I know its not a fuel delivery problem up to the ip because it didnt do it with the other pump and all my fuel lines and lift pump are new.

Its a db2 ip on a 6.5 NA. It originally came off of a 141 6.5 out of a delivery van that threw a rod. It only had around 40000 miles on it but it had been sitting in a warehouse for a few years.

The lever on the side of the pump is a RETARD lever. Push it in and it retards the timing. So light load/throttle gets more timing. Higher load/throttle means more heat in the precups and the diesel evaporates and lights off quicker thus the need to retard the timing.

New parts don't mean good parts. (Some new parts are worse than old parts.) Clear return line off the IP and look for air bubbles. Check lift pump PSI.

Rather than adjusting the retard lever your pump may need more advance. It may have a stuck advance piston from sitting so long. Dirt in a injector or bad injector is possible. So is a sticking or bad valve.

How many miles on the timing chain and how many on the injectors?

I thought i might have had that backwards.

Im not sure how many miles are on the engine but when i had the pan off there was no wear at all. It was a military takeout that i bought. The timing chain had barely any slop at all. If i had to guess id say maybe 15 to 20 thousand milea at the most.

I know the lift pump is good ive checked that. I havent done the clear hose yet but i will try that. Im positive it is something in the ip because it wont do this with any other ip.

A good rebuilt IP from conestogadiesel.com is worth the money. They run so much better with a working IP. (Advance is the main failure) But, make sure you are down to the IP first as you appear to have issues with more than one IP.
