6.5 injector and pump question

Hello all, thank you for your time and input, it is greatly appreciated. I need help figuring out what I should do about my injection pump and injectors.

I currently am rebuilding my mechanical 6.5 and here is what i know about it.
for about 3 years i have owned a 1985 dually that was originally a 6.2L non turbo. At some point the Banks turbo kit was put on. Now currently installed is a 6.5L with the same Banks turbo kit. It is a fairly small non-waste-gated turbo, which i am ok with. Currently it has a mechanical DB2831-5088 injection pump. All other 6.2 stuff was transferred over, including the short Bosch 0430211054 injectors which google tells me are for a 6.2L.
My rebuild has resulted in a decked and bored .020 over block. Promax heads with studs. same crank but i had it balanced. same connecting rods. but everything else is new.
From what I have gathered, the injection pump is for a non turbo 6.5L. I am not sure if the pump has been turned up for the Banks turbo that it has, is there a way to check?

* My main question is regarding my injectors. With my pump, should I switch to 6.5 injectors? if so, which ones. Or are the 6.2 injectors sufficient. I do not want my engine to be built wild. I just want a mild nice running engine. should i stick with my pump or is the DB2-4911 pump worth the cost to switch to? i figure now that i have the engine torn apart, this is the time to switch anything around.

Let me know if any other info would be pertinent. And thank you again for any and all input.

I dont really know all that much about what is suppose to work with what.
Welcome to the forum.
I do think that the injectors You have are sufficient for the 6.5. Others with mor knowledge will post in to either confirm My hunch or to discredit it.

The only way to truly tell if a pumps been turned up either require disassembly, or expensive specialized equipment to test it.

You can can turn it up and count turns to see where it's at. Obviously this will be easy to see if it already maxed out. But you won't be able to tell if someone bumped it up only a 1/8 of a turn.

You should be able to max that pump out without a problem with that setup. Any db2831-×××× pump can be built and calibrated to flow like a 4911 or even higher if you want. The 5088 would be a great core to build and save you money because the 4911 always seems to be an more of a sought after pump.

Your injectors are fine. I actually prefer 6.2 injectors to 6.5 because of the pintle design. Just need to bump up the pop pressure a little.

Yup to everything above.
If you floor it from a dead stop, how big is the exhaust cloud?
Is it grey or black?

Sounds like you built it intelligent for descent use long term. I would keep the fueling to a minimum. You should have a tiny grey cloud the size of a basketball from a dead stop- full throttle. Anything more is really a waste. If you can leave any cloud behind you- you are getting enough fuel from the ip.

If you want to turn up the fuel screw we can walk you through it.

oh yeah- DO NOT buy injectors from just anywhere. TONS of people sell junk!

how would i bump up the pop pressure? also how would i go about rebuilding the 6.2 injectors that i have? i can dissasemble them, and put in my ultrasonic cleaner, but arent there parts that need replacing. i dont know how many miles are on these injectors and i have read a few places that at 100K just replace them.

thanks

there has got to be a reputable dealer for injectors...

thanks

You increase the shim thickness to increase pop pressure. The replaced parts are the compression washers, heat shield washers, and nozzles. To be able to set pop pressure you will also need a pop tester.

Injector pop pressure tester can be built from a bottle jack. There are instructions on various websites online.
An injector tester can also be purchased from the usual suspects, amazon, ebay, etc for not a lot of money and it comes with a coulle of adapters.
I think that an adapter still needs to be bought or built to fit these injectors. I dont know that for sure though.

I'm more of a get tested and have rebuilt kind of guy. Its been a while and I hear parts are not so readily available. I would not install any injector without having it tested first.

Yup. Even if I had to take them to an implement dealer to get them tested. I dont know for sure but, it seems maybe like a CAT distributor or maybe a JD dealer might possibly have a tester pump system. At least I would think that they should.
