My trustworthy GM is showing it's lack of maintenance finally. I hear and feel a noise while cruising highway speeds. It's like I have huge knobby tires kind of noise. It follows the speed of the truck, so I know it's not my HB or engine related. I have an appt. next week with some buddies who own an auto wrecker and a hoist.

When we hoist it, we will be checking rear end oil, u-joint, trans case oil level and my front axles.

Anyone have any other ideas? Is this noise something any of you have had? I'm just looking for as much info before I get to it so I can be as knowledgeable as possible.

Thanks.

Just make sure you match the gear ratios. Don't get too far ahead of yourself though.

Could it be a out of balance tire, or one that has thrown a belt? How old and what brand are the tires?

The tire tread looks good, the truck drives straight down the road so I don't think it's a tire problem. I have about 3 years on the MTZ's and love em. I have felt a seperated tire in the past and it's not that.

The noise will get quieter and louder when going over a bump/dip in the road.

Any leaks where it could be low on diff or TCase oil? Wheel brgs is a good suggestion and obviously u-joints and CVs are possibilities.

U know Mike, talking about leaks...I have one on the passenger side by my front wheel. Could it be from my shaft maybe? So what oil is that, front diff? Sorry I'm kinda ignorant with this. You see, all my GM's never gave me any problems like this so I've never had the opportunity to get into this sort of thing.

Does your rig have a carrier bearing in the rear driveshaft? I know the RCLB 2wd's do. Couldn't tell you if yours has one or not. Only way is to check.

Mine blew up and left me stranded 130 miles from home with no money last summer. Not something you want to experience, trust me. It sounded like really knobby tires like your describing, and the sound did change when i'd hit a bump IIRC. I didn't think anything of it since i had M/Ts on for winter.

Hey Dave, I'm gonna go out later and check. Lets hope it's something simple like this hahaha.

Ok did a few things.

Jacked up the rear end, put the truck in neutral and checked the driveshaft for play at the u-joints. They are tight.
Lifted the front end and rotated the wheels and they seemed normal.
Tried to lift each wheel to see if there is any play in the ball joints and they were tight.

What I did see was on my passenger side where the cv joint or axle goes into the ? front end? there was alot of old oil/grease splattered around. So I'm loosing oil from what, the trans? Where would I go to check and add oil? Thanks.
