Really stupid question
with the engine running and valve covers off, shouldn't I be getting oil up all of the push rods?

I am only getting oil out of the 4th from the front one on each side.

you SHOULD get oil thru all pushrods, the 6.2 needs the same oil as any other engine. im still new to the 6.2's but jump over to Diesel Place and search quick, this has been brought up atleast twice since ive owned my 6.2

Thanks, thats what I thought. I have been looking on DP, hadn't found anything yet.
I know the oil comes up from the rear of the block, and I know none of the pushrods are blocked.

I find it strange I get oil up torwards the front, but not the rear.

Does the oild come up through the lifters?
This is a used engine I just started. Just wondering what could be wrong.

how many miles on it? i remember a few people saying that they were having similar issues. lemme dig around and see where i found the info

EDIT: found one or 2 posts in the 6.2 section but nothing leading anywhere, sign up and toss yer question up on thurr, those guys know what they are talking about and will lend a hand. also dont forget to check out the 6.5L section, they are basicly the same engine

Unknown, but the guy thought 100k.
I just did a re-ring and new bearings. All standard sized, oil clearance was in spec as were ring gaps so I figured it would be good.

Engine started right up, 55psi on the oil gauge. But only getting oil up from the one on each side. The fact that ists the 4th one on each side, and thats the only one I was thinking maybe thats it. But that just seemed "wrong"

did you completely dissasemble the block for the re-ring? maybe a oil galley plug got left off.

Yes, it was a complete tear down. I checked all the journals to see if I would need a regrind. All specced out ok so I went with just new parts.

While the engine was on the stand, before putting on the tranny I ran the oil pump with a drill. Diesel doesn't have a Dizzy, but there is a a can driven vacume pump is the 'normal' SBC dizzy location that also runs the oil pump. Anyway I ran the pump with a drill and got 60psi at the gauge mounted near the oil filter, oil sprayed up out of the vacume pump opening, but wasn't getting anything from the pushrods. I thought this was an issue so I pulled the rear gally plugs.I was able to get a piece of coat hanger wire pretty far up, even with the lifters in place.

(yes I should have stopped here and asked this question :( )

I definately put the plugs back in, otherwise oil would be coming out the bottom of the bellhousing.

If the pushrods are clear, and I am getting oil towards the front, but not the rear, am I looking at lifters?
I reused the old ones. After I cleaned them, they sat on a shelf for a couple months. Prior to installing them I did put them into a bucket of oil, for 3-4 weeks.

The 6.2/6.5 uses hydraulic lifters.

did you have the lifters out? cam out? some of these engines used a oversize lifter on some bores. I would check the pushrods for blockage.

For for my own curiosity, what would be the cause of this?

The oil to the pushrods come up through the valve lifters.Take the square shaped snap ring out of top of lifter, and remove cap that bottom of pushrod rides in and small flat disc. Look at bottom side of cap. There should be a bump in metal that goes from one side of cap to the other. The disc rides on this and rocks back and forth to meter oil up pushrod when engine runs. A common problem in the old 5.7 and 4.3 and 6.2 diesels with a lot of wear or from not changing oil often enough is that the bump wears flat or almost flat and reduces or stops oil from going up the pushrods, which caused accelerated rocker arm pivot wear and eventual valve clatter. Fixed many of these over the years. I discovered this cause and started robbing caps from spare lifters to fix the problem. The non roller Olds lifters used the same caps.

It is highly recommended to never reuse lifters and to replace if already in there.

I thought lifters and pushrods were among the lighter wear factor pieces in the 6.2/6.5. No?

Anyone have a favorite source for replacement lifters?

I've had very inconsistent results from the usual suspects (Sealed Power in particular), though mostly with gas engines. Would sure like some peace of mind with the 599 I'm putting together.

Buddy, that is proper info on flat tappet cams. On our roller cams, you can change one, any or all without worry. This is assuming that the camshaft lobes are not damaged by a bad roller. All the lifter parts are interchangeable except the outer and inner body. Those are selective factory fit.

Yessss
A falt tappet cam, either Hydraulic or mechanical should never see new lifters on an old cam or vice versa.

The rollers are happy unless as mentioned the cam is torn up.

I have never seena 6.2/6.5 that had failed to oil on top.
