When I get the new engine installed I'll need to do a couple quick oil changes. After the first 3000 or so I plan to install the bypass system so the adaptor will no longer be necessary.

Is it possible to use a stock oil filter installed vertically, like in a 2 wheel drive, if the front drive shaft is removed? I don't have anything requiring 4x4 planned for the next month or so.

You will need the 2wd adapter and a very short filter. Not sure if one is made short enough. It would have to be really short as the front yoke is right there.
I would even go as far to say it won't work, but maybe someone else has found a filter that will work??
I think the fram P5 is a short filter and it would be to long.

I did this on my 95 recently, I don't know about the 98. I just took the nipple out of the adapter and screwed it into the block and screwed a NAPA 1060 oil filter onto it. Yes the yoke was close but not a problem.

This is a picture of my 93 with a filter in sideways to show how tight it is. No way it would work on mine. Do you have a picture of yours? I would love to run a verticle filter as I never use 4x4.

I don't have a picture of mine because I remoted my oil filter and put the driveshaft back in. When the filter was on mine it was right in front of the yoke in the way of the driveshaft bolting up. You can just do a remote mount and even keep your 4X4 working.

IIRC I think yours has the big flat flange for the yoke whereas mine is the u joint type seat. That could be the difference and I can see there being more clearence with the flange style so, I would have to clairifiy my statement above about it not working. It wont work if you have a yoke like mine in the picture above, but should work on the flange style (assuming thats what fonecop has).

the yoke on my truck looks just like yours but looks like it sits forward a bit or the engine is back a bit.
