Will a 2000 2wd 4L80 out of a 1ton van swap into a 96 4x4 pickup?

Does the 2000 have a stand alone computer?

Can I swap the the tail shaft for the transfer case?

What else?

Thanks

PS, both truck and donor have 5.7

One out of a 94 won't go into a 96 and be fully functional. And you will need the adapter lines to hook-up the 2000 in your 96 as 97 was when they changed the lines over to the rear oiler and changed the tranny cooler lines hook-ups. 95 and 96 will interchange with each other directly. 94 doesn't have the mounting bosses for the gear selector/neutral safety switch, so a newer one can go into a 94 but the 94 can pretty much only go into a 94. 97+ pretty much all interchange easily, but you can get an adapter to put it into earlier models.

Actually, that's what I was wondering about. I'm looking at installing a newer 4L80 in my 94 one ton dually. Found several trannies that would be good rebuilders - a 97, a 2000 and a 2004. Still researching if it's truly 'plug and play'.

It will bolt right in, but you will need the adapters for the cooler lines if you put a 97+ into a 96-.

Ya know, I can do that! ):h Thanks for the info!

Seriously, there's a guy in Longview (about 20 miles form here) that's dismantling some commercial delivery vehicles. He claims the 4L80's he's pulling are all in good shape. I'd like to get a 99 or later and go thru it and get it ready to replace the one I have in my truck. By late 99, the 80-series had all the cool updates - stronger planetary sets, upgraded center support design, stronger ring gears and a HD sprag. To do this stuff on mine would cost cubic dollars, so buying a later model to overhaul and install winds up saving me a chunk of change.

99.5+ 80's had quite a few improvements, but I believe it was the 85 that got the hardened planetaries and such sometime in 01 or 02.

Don't know anything about the 85's. Wonder if that's what was bolted up behind the DuraMax motors.... I've seen a little info on the 80's used behind a detuned version of the DM. Same bellhousing bolt pattern, different torque converter. The 2004 tranny that the guy has is bolted behind a gas motor. If I go with that one, I'll need to replace the torque converter with the diesel version, but my PCM should take it from there.

A real challenge is gonna be finding a good replacement TC. The stock unit in my 94 is a low stall, dual stator converter. I'm having a tough time getting info on whether a single or a dual stator is used in the after market replacement units. Everyone claims their stuff is built to OEM spec, but when you start asking specific questions the answers start getting kinda vague. "Well, if that's what the OEM calls for, then that's what our converter has." Oh yeah, works for me. ):h

PRECISION INDUSTRIES is building a triple disc I believe for the 4L80/85E's now, as well as SUNCOAST. TRANSTAR also makes a decent torque converter for towing I believe, I know I put one of there stock replacement towing converters into a 4L60E with a 305 and it made a big difference in how the truck towed afterwards. The 4L85E will be the one in late model motorhomes and the DURAMAX vans, as well as from GM PERFORMANCE PARTS as a replacement unit(for a pretty reasoneable price for a 100% new unit). It has hardened planetaries and some other goodies in it. I believe it's the one that MIKE L used in the BUICK GRAND NATIONAL(with some of his magic added in).

I've heard good things about Suncoast TC's. I'll continue digging, but I gotta tell ya, I'm leaning towards OEM. I've got over 200K on a truck that's been SERIOUSLY used by two folks before me, and the tranny works without a hiccup. Now that I've added Bill Heath's GL4 chip,it's GREAT.

I installed yesterday hughes performance torque converter to my suburban, it feels great, but i havent drove more then maybe 80 miles.
They do converters with triple clutch and lower stall speed.

What swap options are available for a th400? IIRC the 4l80e was based on the th400, can I jsut swap one in and add a computer? I've heard mention of an aftermarket stnad alone, sounds like it may be pricy. My idea was to get a wrecked vehicle that I can take the 4l80e and the computer, but not sure if that's possible. What I want to put it in is an 82 k30 with a 454, th400 and 205 case. I want to keep the t-case because it is supposedly a rare model, the truck has factory auto hubs.
I'm probably not going to do anything unless I can do it relatively cheap, because the th400 I've got is fine. I'd just like to have more gears, and be able to run on the highway. I'd also consider a manual swap if it was a five speed, or anything but an sm465.

you could just put in a nv4500 if you wanted a 5 speed. the only thing I can see right away for a 48l0E is you need an engine speed sensor. It goes in where the distributes sits though.
