Please help, I am at my whit's end!!

This has been a 6-7 month ordeal. I am getting codes P0251 and P0370. The truck has no power (NONE whatsoever). It barely will come off idle.

I have performed the following to fix the problem.
1. checked all grounds, cleaned grounds and even replaced a ground.
2. replaced lift pump with Heath Lift Pump
3. replaced the Injector Pump with Heath rebuild
4. replaced the crank position sensor
5. replaced the ECM with Heath programmed ECM.

The truck has not changed its reaction to my right foot with any of these "fixes". I have spoken to Bill Heath extensively on the problem and spent too much money on it already.

This is my family daily driver and I am open to any suggestions to get it back on the road.

Thank you,
Todd

So you spent a bunch of money replacing this stuff, why, in a attempt to stumble upon a fix, and the shop you were spending the money at said what during all this, did Heath's shop have any trouble shooting help in a attempt to find the cause or ??

After you changed the IP, did you go through the steps to relearn the pump to the ecm???? Sounds like the electronic system needs resetting....

That's funny . . .! Last I talked with Bill, he had low regard for rebuilt IP's :D

It would likely set the 'IP out of range code' (forget the actual code) and not those two.

Do agree that if not done, need to do the KOKO to trigger a TDCO re-learn.

I am getting codes P0251 and P0370.

A quick search is turning up some candidates:
> PMD - check by swapping with a known good unit.
> Clogged in-tank filter - check the fuel pressure (preferably at the IP inlet) and flow when opening the 'T' valve.
> IP - Do the 2000 RPM test (and No, it does not matter that the IP is a recent reman).
> A chafed wire (or two) coming off the IP.

One unhappy optic sensor reading going on there me thinks. Remove your optic sensor filter if it's still there.

Wow, that's a shotgun approach, maybe needed the full auto shotgun AA-12? Reloaded the shells with $100 bills instead of buckshot. Or diagnose it first instead of putting Bills kids through college.

Did you test the harness to the optic sesnor for impedance, grounds, signal? Probably on the to do list if not. But first...

Replace BOTH the supply line from the fuel filter to the IP and the return line coming out the front of it with clear tubing. Install a tee in the input line and attach a fuel pressure gauge. Auto parts stores will rent the 15 psi fuel pressure test gauge if you dont have one. Home Depot/ Ace hardware sells clear tubing. 1/4"

After that: What fuel pressure at idle? Open the drain valve while idling, how long does it take to fill up a quart? Are there any bubbles in either of the clear lines?

Jay and SC could be right, but if it had the problems before the swap...

From my original post, it does sound like I just threw parts at it hoping that would fix it. That is not the case. When I first started getting the codes, the truck would still run normal and the codes would not clear with my Scanguage. (the codes would clear for less than a second and come back, sometimes the truck would shut off when I cleared the codes) Eventually, the truck got worse, meaning it lost power until it would not rev up much past idle.

I searched the internet and found what the codes were and started with grounds. Then fuel pressure. I replaced the non-working lift pump and now have 8 psi at idle and about 3-4 psi under load.

I had no luck with grounds and lift pump and ended up replacing the IP. When I replaced the IP, I also replaced the fuel lines to and from the Filter Fuel Manager. Still no power. I assumed that it must need to be timed. So, I took it to the local diesel shop. The owner is familiar with the 6.5 and could not time the vehicle because the computer locked him out. He determined that I had an electrical problem. I took the truck to the vehicle electrical specialist in the Raleigh area. They determined that I needed a new ECM. I purchased a used ECM from a scrap yard and had it programmed for my vehicle.

It seems to me that the stepper motor is not "stepping" up the fuel in the IP.

My vote is to eliminate the IP at this point. And it is almost free (just a little time and small amount of fuel).

First do the KOKO routine for triggering a TDCO re-learn to get the ECM and IP in synch with each other.

Then do the 2000 RPM test.

Depending on results we go from there . . .

If the shop got locked out of the ECM then it might be way out of time. But... you should get a code for that too.

The stepper motor controls the timing, nothing with actual fuel delivered. The fuel delivery is handled via the fuel solenoid on the back of the pumpal and the fuel solenoid driver.

I just performed the KOKO and the 2000 RPM test.

KOKO test - no change - I idled and drove until temp was over 170 degrees - no change, codes still present and no power.

2000 RPM Test - seemed to pass the test without hesitation of "jumping" of the throttle.

Heres some reading for you. These are the diag flow charts, they're just for obd1 so the code numbers are different.56534565.gif 56534564.gif 56541661.gif
