Hey guys, yes I know this is not engine related but it is hard to find good information on our trucks. Is anyone running an in dash Nav system in our vintage? I am not as concerned about sound quality as ease of use for the Nav and Bluetooth...Travelling lots in unknown territory...do not really want to butcher up the dash. My Burb has the stock stereo that comes with the full load...

I replaced my stock stereo with an aftermarket unit. Looks just fine. The kit comes with an adapter plate so the new head unit fits right in the old place. The kit also came with a nice little "cubby" for where the CD player is (I removed the CD player, as well). Although I've never used the Nav portion, it's got all kinds of goodies like DVD player (can send it to rear screens, as well), rear camera, video inputs, Sat radio, etc.

There's many models/manufacturers out there - but you'll be looking for "normal" sized radios - I think it's called "Din 1". Basically, it means the touchscreen screen will "slide out" when needed. Crutchfield is a great place to learn and it's a good company to buy from, as well - excellent customer service.

You could do something like I did in my wifes Burb...

Its a full on windows computer - check out www.centrafuse.com for the front end software that I am using now - it handles nav, mp3, video, etc (including bluetooth phone management)

Thanks will look at their site...I noticed on your signature it says your '98 is VSSB adjusted? I can only find info for pre '95 vssb..

Garmin GPS windshield mount and ignition relay mod for lighter plug. (So it goes off with key and doesn't drain batts.)
Keeps the factory nice stereo and GPS can be removed for updates easy.

I used the info that I got from one of the books published through The Page. It's been a while, but I'm sure I still have it somewhere.

I should be looking into doing something like this in my '94. I hate the way the aftermarket stereos dont fit in the stock spot and have to be moved to the cassette opening. Maybe one of these units could fit in the stock location?

Dan,

Here's a couple of pics of my radio to give you an idea of what an aftermarket set-up might look like. Some may come with a different "adapter plate"/kit to fit around the new radio, but you probably get the idea.

Thank you. This was a few years ago, but I seem to remember it being somewhere around $500. It's not quite as fancy looking as some of the big name brands, but it's also less expensive -- or at least it was at the time.
