Hello all,

Just bought this jeep about 2 months ago with a slight lifter tick. The body has 190k on it, was told the motor had somewhere around 120k and the transmission has 100k. But I do not know all this for a fact. The tick progressively got a little louder so I starting looking into tick threads. Then one morning I started it up and it sounded as if it was more of a knock! Whats everyones opinion? If it needs a new engine I will put one in myself. Are all 4.0L alike? (mounting holes n’ such?) I see some threads say no, and others yes. Do I have to get it out of another ’99 and up Grand? Thanks for any help! I need to know if I should start looking for another engine. Currently the vehicle is my backup, but this winter I was planning on making it my D/D.

Ok, so I have been doing research, calling around to private sellers and boneyards. I have come up with 99-00 Grand engines are specific, and 01-04 Grand engines are specific. They yard owners were telling me that the 99-00 would be a direct install, however are more prone to the piston skirt cracking. The 01-04 are not direct install, and require some sort of modification on an oil fitting and the motor mount bosses, however they are a more “reliable” (the way they put it) motor.
I removed the front plastic bumper and grille (must have been off before, it was only held on by 4 bolts, and the faom behind bumper pad was duct taped onto the core support). I also pulled back the headlights (they are badly fogged and will eventually also be replaced) and the P/O cobbed up the wiring harness to the driver headlight with electrical tape and some solid copper line. Unbelievable. I also noticed some coolant sitting at the bottom of the support while jacking the vehicle up onto my ramps. The radiator is starting to corrode and the fins are falling out. While pulling the inspection plate off i noticed there really wasnt anything left of it. It looks like a piece of swiss cheese. I checked two of the flywheel to torque converter bolts and they were in very tightly. So for now i think im just going to replace the engine. I got a line on a '02 4.0L out of a G/C Laredo with 97K miles for $1,000. Very local. So i will be posting pics of all my progress and what i find here. I got a good look at the under side of this monster and saw another thing that bothered me. The P/O had taped up the front driveshaft boot where it goes to the front pumpkin. Its ripped bad, so that will need to be replaced soon. The rocker panels have large holes in them and will need to be replaced at the latest next year if i want anything else to last. I really like the Jeep, but i think i was taken at $3,000. Cant trust a single sole.... Buyer beware, no matter what, the guy seemed nice as all get out, but now is very hard to contact. I know im screwed but i at least wanted to give him a piece of my mind. He said its a get in and drive vehicle. Thanks for all help to get me where i am and more in the future to get this thing done!

Pics i took of the removal process. Found many cobb jobs and bad spots while in the process. Radiator was falling apart. One of the trailing arms for the front axle has jigantic rot holes in it( will get pics when i replace it), headlight wire cobb. Taped front driveshaft boot. The list goes on. This is getting way more expensive than i wanted. BTW, it was a piston skirt......

I've never persoanlly seen a piston break in one that wasn't run hot, but I don't like the 96+ metric pistons they used in them. I prefer the 87-95 pistons as they are much beefier. I know that 04 is a one off from what I have been told, but my 4.0L experience is limited to 00 and older. Personally I would pull it down and see how bad the cylinder is, if it isn't that bad I would just replace the pistons with a set from a 95, or better yet do a stroker out to a 4.6L and make it run like it should have from the factory.
