hello
This is my first time here and I have been directed here many times with questions and have found you people know a thing or two about vehicles. Well I'm hoping to get an easy answer for this one. :) I have a 1997 dodge Dakota 4x4, the brake caliper bolt threads are stripped and I'm having a time trying to find a fix.
First of all what is the part called that the brake caliper bracket is attached too. I've been told it is either a steering knuckle or a shackle but I can't get a confirmation. I was told by a Dodge dealer to fix this problem I had to buy the whole assembly which is 800.00. my truck probably isn't worth that much. But she can get the job done no matter what it is. (as you can tell I like my dodge.)
Any way the brake caliper comes off but I can't find the caliper bracket only. It seems that only way is to buy the whole thing. I was wondering if anyone could help me find the part I really need and where to get it?

It is the steering knuckle you need, this is fairly common on Dakotas and Durangos. The cheapest way will be to find a good one in a junkyard. You could try to helicoil it, but being a safety-type thing I'd go with a different knuckle with good threads.

thanks for the reply

I tried the heli coil and after I did it they said that was the worst thing I could have done because it finished damaging the threads. I've tried to find on in every junk yard I can think of and no one has them because they sell everyone they have. The thing I don't understand is I can't just buy the caliper bracket, they seperate from each other. But dodge and everyone else say they only sell them together, probably more money that way.

But I appreciate your response and thank you for clearing the terminology.

thanks

It could be they are a "fitted" assy and why they sell them as a set. If it was me, I'd take a close look and see if I was able to install a "heavy series" Keensert which is better for this application than a Helicoil.
Here's a quick idea of them if you aren't familiar.http://www.newmantools.com/kee.htm
Just do a web search for Keensert and you'll find a bunch of info.
