I have a 1988 GMC 1 ton dually with a 5.7 currently getting 4.7MPG and a TH400 transmission with rear ends running 456 gear ratio. I have a 1996 P30 Box truck with a 6.5 non turbo that I am going to install in my 88 using a 5 speed standard transmission. This should be easy enough to do considering I own the complete running P30 series truck. How do I know the difference between a manual & electronic IP? "Injector Pump" I plan on adding a turbo from a 95 6.5 chevy pickup. Do I need to swap the entire wiring harness? The P30 came with a 4L80E which I will not be using due to the 5 speed. Hopefully this will be a pretty simple swap but it's my first gas to diesel. I have turned wrenches for over 25 years on everything from go carts to bulldozers so I am capable of just about anything but I'm definitely not afraid to ask for a little heads up when I need it. I have searched all around but not being able to find my same situation. The numbers on my block were some that I read that were the better engines, I don't recall at this time what it was but can get it if needed. Also the motor has a manual fuel pump mounted on the side of the motor. I appreciate any insight I can receive and I have been reading these forums for some time now just feeding my appetite. lol I figured it was time to join before my swap.

It's most likely a mech IP with it having the mech lift pump, the elect IP will have a PMD mounted on it (looks like a black box about the size of a deck of cards.

You are correct ak diesel driver there is only a tps & fuel shut off. With this being known, will I need the ECM & complete harness from my P30 or can I run W/O the tps?

Thanks so much, I did read that the TPS was for the trans so I do "NOT" really need the P30 harness at all. :) My 88 only needs vacuum for the power brakes so would you recommend using the hydro assist brake system from the P30? I know the vacuum pumps in my area run about 200 bucks and I'm like the rest of the world, on a slim budget. Also which, if any, standard shift flywheels will work with the 6.5? I know it has an external weight on it so I was thinking maybe a 454 flywheel may work. The reason I ask is because I don't have a flywheel yet and I'm wanting to get everything together before I start tearing my truck apart. I'm pretty sure I'll need a longer throttle cable as well. That should take care of my parts list besides the turbo setup I'm doing some swapping on with my neighbor.

As far as the wiring will I just need my starter wires, IP wire for fuel shut off, wiring for the glow plug timer, and wires for my gauges? I assume the MAP sensor & the water in fuel & wires as such are not needed?

UPDATED: I ended up buying a 93 with a 6.5 turbo & a 4L80E tranny and just swapped everything over to my truck because the 93 was rusted in half. Thanks again for y'alls input, now for some more questions... lol I reckon I'll start a new thread.
