1996 6.5 diesel Suburban will not move in reverse.

4L80E transmission 340,000 miles

My daughter just called. She is parked on a parking block so she can not go forward. She said the Suburban will not back up.

Is this a common fail?

340K on the tranny????? My vote is that is impressive!

Not sure whether reverse going out in the 4L80E is the sign of death. It is in my gasser's tranny.

But in any case . . . 340K on the tranny?????

drug it out of the parking spot and drove it a few miles to a friends house. The fluid is black - like used diesel oil I didn't bother to try smelling it.

It didn't feel like it was doing all that great going forward either. I was scared to drive it the 27 miles home.

What year did the transmissions change? I have a transmission here for the 1998, but I STILL Need it for the 1998 Suburban.

I was thinking they changed the lines/ports in 1997 so I would have to change lines to use the trans I have in the 1996. Can anybody set me straight on this?

I just got back and haven't searched yet.

At 340,000, I would plan on a new one. If you have to stretch it out, try a new filter and cross your fingers. If you do a flush, expect another filter Change in 2,000 miles.

When reverse went out in my old 4l80e the rest of the Trans followed suit soon after. Looks like you need new or full rebuild right away. I wouldn't waste money on long shot filter and fluid changes that may work but only buy you a 1000 miles or less. Plus if you do the R&R yourself you won't be too bad on the price.
