I got a 1993 K1500 Suburban and my tires are getting pretty bald so I'm trying to decide on some new tires. I had BFG All Terrains on my s10 Blazer (R.I.P good buddy) and really liked them. Right now there are some crappy highway tires on the Suburban size 265/75 R16. I'm wondering if I can go any bigger and if so how much my gas mileage would be affected.

Also...although I'm pretty sure its a good site my dad (who is going 50/50 on the tires with me) wants to know how good Tire Rack is.

Tire rack is ok but by the time you pay shipping you might as well buy local in my experience.

What engine and gear ratio are in the burb? That will effect the tire size, 265/75 is a good all around tire.

She's got the good ole 350...no clue on the gear ratio though

I'd like to buy local as well but the Tires Plus by me is a bunch of idiots that insist on selling either crappy tires or horribly over priced tires...I suppose I could pay a visit to actual mechanic shops

With the weight of the burb i stay in the 265/75 range, if going for just mpgs then get 235/85's they are the same height.

IMHO, goodyr silent armors are a good A/t tire and they wont fling many rocks

If you go to 285's you will likely run into rubbing issues and that is gonna put some strain on the 4l60/700R4 under your truck unless you have upgraded to 4.10's, they dont like the stress.

There could be 1-2 mpg gained but i wouldnt promise it since all trucks are different. I've never done a back to back myself. I just know that the heavier/wider 265/75 can reduce mpg a bit. When I went from 245's to 285's in a 95 4x4 305 my truck lost 4 mpgs and gained most of it back when i went down to 265's, this truck was offroad alot and narrower 235 wasnt a good idea.

That being said a 265 is a good all around tire but is technically too wide for our OEM wheels, the 235/85 is perfect on our wheels.

Never had that problem and dont own a burb but i assume a new spring is all you need. You're not getting good enough mpg if you are wearing the gas door out! lol

Haha I dunno what the hell my dad did to it. It appears to be the same gas door as all other Chevy full size trucks of its time. I'll probably just get the right torx head and head back to the junkyard.
