Hey guys
I'm new to the site and I apologize if this is in the wrong spot.
I have a 1993 k2500 with a 6.5 195xxx km and it has the mechanical ip. I've been having problems with it losing power when driving and then stalling. it will start back up if I put the pedal to the floor and then it will happen again in about a minute. I've tried to diagnose the problem but have failed miserably.
First changed the fuel filter, the old one had a yellow coating on it (nothing crazy tho)
Next I did the t valve test with the truck running and nothing came out so I went and got a new ops and installed it and that was not the problem.
Then I jumped the connector on the ops plug to see if the lift pump turned on and it did, then I opened the t valve and diesel came out( the truck was not running at this point)
The diesel was coming out very slowly though so I swapped out the pump and that did not fix anything.
Next step was to jump the lp with 12v and start the truck (so I could narrow down what system is failing). The pump was running and the truck started great and idled fine and the t valve test passed( truck was running and diesel was coming out of the valve)
So I went for a drive and it was running fine and I decided to check the t valve again and nothing came out and the truck stalled 10 seconds into having the valve open.
I'm at a loss on what to, my next step was drop the tank to check the lining and to start checking for a leak in one of the lines.
Any input to the problem will help
Thanks

Welcome Jeremy. Sounds exactly like tank sock is plugged. One thing to check first. in the ffm take back out your filter and remove and clean or replace the "last ditch" screen. it is on the stem that the filter goes over. If that is not it...

Drop the tank, remove the sock and throw it as far as you can. Make sure the inside of the tank is clean. You will want a pre lift pump filter- most mount it on the frame rail lots of threads here about which one to use and where to mount. The only other thing left is the fuel lines themselves coming apart on the inside. A good idea to change anyways at this many years on them. Get the biofuel rated hose even if you don't run it now, fuel stations are all starting to use partial mixes most everywhere.

Thanks for the quick reply Will.
I'm going to start to drop the tank today when I get home and I will update when I have the tank out and have a look at the sock.
Thanks again

Really don't forget the screen. If that's it after the tank drop ya might not be all smiles, and it is Friday after all.

Thanks for the offer and I'll keep that in mind.
I removed the fuel filter and the little screen that should be on the stem was not there. I checked the old filter and it was not in it. So I'm guessing it has been removed by someone else.
So much for the easy fix.... I'll drop the tank and update with what I find.

My mistake, I just watched the video on leroydiesel.com and i dident look in the correct spot. I'll do that properly tomorrow

Welcome to TTS!

And Welcome to dieselbug HELL! :suicide:

A quick read to bring you up to speed as I bet your filter looked like mine:
http://www.thetruckstop.us/forum/sh...wth-in-ULSD-and-Biodiesel-This-can-affect-you!

Figure on throwing away the fuel, fuel tank, lift pump, fuel level sensor is also ruined, removing/disassemble the Fuel Filter Manager to clean it, using biocide like Lucas oil or Powerservice and flushing the fuel system out of a 5 gal bucket with cleaner. Warning if you insist on using the acidic and water laden fuel with bugs in it kiss the head and rotor in the IP goodbye along with the injectors. Seriously the diesel fuel is no longer diesel fuel and really waste oil. Gasoline also kills the bugs. Taking shortcuts just plugs more expensive filters. Biocide, a little gasoline, and clean replace above parts is the road you will take sooner or later to get it under control.

Your fuel tank will be losing the lining and it will plug the sock or pickup tube without a sock. It costs too much to have the tank cleaned of the bugs vs. a new tank. Hint: don't run a sock in the tank again as it is a pain to get to. Just run a Walbro that has a screen already in it. You may be able to wash the tank out yourself with dish detergent and hot water IF the silver colored lining is not pealing off. Bugs tend to make the factory lining 'paint' come off. I have washed new tanks when the system got re-infected.

You may have gotten a bad batch of fuel Report the last station you got diesel from and see if it helps pay for the above mess.

Also sounds like the OPS isn't running the lift pump. Likely it is bad.

Leroy sells an o ring kit for the FFM, and a bug/bomb proof fuel level sensor. I have put his sender in new tanks after the bugs ate the tank and factory sensors. His sender worked (and still works now) in the worst biodiesel bug slime that ate a tank, IP and injectors... Your fuel level sender will fail by reading empty when your tank is above empty to full. I dropped a full tank thinking it was empty from the failed new OEM sensor in the bug laden diesel. So verify the tank is empty before dropping it as the OEM pickup also will plug and get no more fuel for dropping a tank. Yeah use a big hose in the fill neck to empty the tank.

Good luck with it.

Welcome to TTS Jeremy. '93 owner here as well. We will help you get it fixed- but you gotta turn the wrenches! :D

Hey everyone, thanks for all the welcomes and replys. I took out the last ditch screen and it was pretty clean so I dropped the tank and took out the inlet and gauge and the sock is clogged. I can still see diesel on the inside of the sock that is not coming out. I'm assuming that it should not do that?
So it looks to be the problem. I'm going to get some parts and I'll put it back together and let you know if it is fixed.
thanks for all the help!

Tank sock (TS) should not hold fuel :frown2:

Remove TS all together. I have/recomend a 30 micron filter after the tank but before the LP. Also I'd say to drill a few holes in pick up as far down (close to old sock) as possible. This allows a vaccum break incase a "marble" gets in the tank and plugs the inlet.

I still havn't gotten around to replacing my fuel tank, I'm still using the 35 gallon chemical tank bolted down in the bed

Sounds like you got bugs plugging things up. I would run some biocide to be sure.
