Ok, I played around with my boost this evening. at WOT and 65mph it spikes to 13 PSI and then drops off to about 10psi. I've got 236K miles on this truck and I dont want to blow it up. Just a little bit of black smoke when I punch it, other than that it looks pretty clean.

Sorry to be a nervous nelly, but the last thing I need is a blown up engine right now. I'll be towing from Socal to Houston on the I-10 starting tuesday.

I just towed down from Redding, and other than the grapevine on the I-5 (25mph going up) it towed very nice at 65mph, and I think I got about 10 mpg. (except that last leg that included the grapevine).

How heavy are you total with trailer? I'm guessing the truck is about 7500 empty, has 4.10 gears, and the stock turbo?
Do you have an EGT and/or intake temperature gauge? Those will tell you if you're doing any damage over the long term. Pulling something like the grapevine you'll see intake temperatures over 300 and EGT could easily pass 1300. Those are the danger zones. The stock ECM starts scaling back the fuel at 230 degrees on the intake.

When I'm pulling heavy I keep my eye on the EGT and lighten my right foot as required. I can power up a hill at 40 blowing past 1300 EGT but I keep it under 1200 and usually about 25-30mph.

Mike's 2 cents.

Black smoke is worse than too much boost. Punch it smoke while the turbo builds boost is ok and normal. Do you have EGT gauge? This is more important. You can run 14 PSI boost max high gear with the trailer. Smoke black and that is when trouble starts.

Think of the miles on your engine and ask if it is a rebuilt engine or the original.

Then think of the transmission and see if there is a cooler in front of the radiator for it...

Cooling system including fan and water pump?

In short don't be surprised if your high mile engine just flat blows up working the grapevine just from age and miles.

My coolant temps never got above 210, fan comes on about 200. I dont have egt at this point, on my priority list as soon as I sell a kidney, or the IP that I have in the classifieds . It is the original engine, its a 97 so its got the dual thermostats on it. Cooling hasnt been much of a problem since I've been towing, as long as I take it slow and run the heater full blast. I dont run in the heat of the day either. My trailer is about 12K. Yes, 4.10 gears and stock turbo, yes, transmission cooler.

The first time I pulled the grapevine going north I had the stock ECM and no turbomaster and the old IP and it pulled ok, just made me nervous. I dont think I'll be able to afford an EGT before heading east, but there are only a few short pulls that I can find, I suppose if I've done the grapevine both ways, I'm probably ok (knock on wood).

There is no sustained smoke, its just the puff from the turbo spool up.
