my dads 02 caviler 2.4 DOHC 5 speed is idleing at 1500 and it should be at around 900. tried the TPS and that wasnt the problem. is there some sort of a sensor that controlls the idle speed. an engine speed sensor maybe? any help would be greatly appreciated

not sure about those cars but I imagine it has an idle air control valve on the throttle body. Typically a high idle like that I look for vacuum leaks or any un-metered air getting into the engine.

2nd the advice on the vac leak. Start looking for loose or missing lines, anything cracked etc. Thats the easy stuff, next step is to see if it has any codes stored and track those down.

no codes and i found on rockauto the idle air control valve that may be the problem. why would cracked/missing vacume lines cause the high idle

is there a way to test the Idel air controll valve??

not really....you can probably just clean it out with some carb cleaner. Probably just has gunk on it. While you got the carb cleaner there start spraying it on some vacuum lines and listening for the idle to change. Most of the time it's one of those 2 things. When un-metered air ( air not accounted for by the MAF) gets into the engine it will cause a high idle like that.

Well i think its the IAV beacouse with the truck running i can unplug it and nothing changes. got one ordered will see when it gets here

you could try just cleaning it first. The IAC on my wifes Durango is bad about getting gunked up so every 4-5 months it seems I have to pull it off and clean it out real good so the plunger moves freely. About a 15 minute job.

ill have to try that. dad orderd one from rockauto. but it wont be here for a few days they wanted $104 at the parts store for the dang thing! rock auto had 4 of them on closeout for $23 so he bought that one.
