I was planning on buying a Teds take out this year, a member on another board messaged me to let me know he was selling a 6.5 from a H1 in 02. One of the big reasons i wanted to go with a teds is because they fixed alot of the issues that my 94 6.5 came with. Are the 6.5s from 02 and 06-08 going to be the same? The 6.5 from the 02 has only like 55k on it, would it be worth paying more for a teds takeout?

Still a used engine. If you look you can see some threads on here where Ted's did NOT test the engine they sold and caused the member big problems by having to pull the bad engine back out. Cracked cylinder as I recall.

55K in dessert sand can leave a surplus military engine in unknown condition.

Why are you replacing your engine? Unless it is cracked now there is no reason to change the engine for a newer one. Sure the newer ones are less prone to cracking, but, not all of them crack and they give you ~100K+ of service before it is an issue anyway. I have been having luck with cheap 1980's 6.2's for 6.5 replacements.

After you buy a used engine you should re-ring it and deglaze the cylinders. Storage takes it's toll on these engines.

WarWagon... Wasn't that just one isolated incident where somebody received a bad engine from Teds, or were there more..?? . I never really looked that hard into it.

I do think I remember a discarded "core" engine being accidentally mixed in with the good ones and being shipped out... However, I have been to Teds and had seen their testing procedures, it was on the "non sophisticated" side of things, but they had a test stand to run them on. I also had seen their structure where tested 6.2's / 6.5's were out of the weather, crated and ready to ship.

It seems to me that the many positives out weigh the very few negatives by a substantial amount on the customer basis / dealings with Teds... Several other members and I have received engines in almost "brand new" condition.

But, to each their own.

I am a h1 guy w/12 years owning and 15 years wrenching on them. Military trucks are normally governed to 60 mph, h1 is not. Gearing moves cruise speed up to 3000+ rpm. The high hp rating of 195 was at 3400 rpm! That equates to major overheat and wear problems especially in turbo hummers less w/na and 6.2 The difference in another 15-20 mph is massive in these rigs, believe me. Did he have egt/boost gauges on it? If so he at least spent money on purpose to pay attention. If you are p/u engine from him ask to "check out his h1 for fun" if he dropped another 6.5 in it,we'll...

On these engines, I would at least tear down and measure everything, then new gaskets and head bolts or studs and you know how long before you expect problems and it goes in with no oil or coolant leaks.

2 considerations- why did he (h1) take out the 6.5 in the first place? Military take out is s.o.p. still possible problems but not always.
If you have problems with either- what are your options

I have no opinion on teds I never used him.

Are you going into a pick up with this? If so avoid the CENTER MOUNT turbo from h1. Or you will be using your old heads. (The Fermanator is the man) intake mounting holes are different in the head.

Well that guy that was selling the 02 sold it so thats out of the question. I still like the idea of the the military take out but i just dont have that kind of money right now. I was planning on changing my engine just because it was used pretty hard by the previous owner, leaking all over pretty much, has a blown head gasket, and needs a new injection pump lol. It honestly still runs fine but we go on long offroading and road trips with it and need it to be reliable. I actually found someone locally selling a 6.5 with 110k out of a 96 silverado. He also put the mechanical pump which i wanted to do. I can get it from him for 700.

Quite frankly the used 6.5 engines around AZ are JUNK! Only reason they get removed is on failure or the truck being totaled. I have looked them over hard before going with a 6.2. My favorite was the one with rainwater filling the intake runner... Did not have any luck getting a good price or good engine in Phx.

Ted's came up with at least a couple bad engines on here.

You can get a 30K mile military take out 6.2 for $1200 with a 30+ day warranty from Boyce equipment.

Head gaskets don't ruin the entire engine and what have you done to condemn the IP? many things like failed lift pump or air in the system need to be checked first before looking at the IP. You could likely fix your engine cheaper than swapping it - maybe.

Id love to just fix my engine, i just think i worry that im going to get the heads pulled to replace the gaskets and have bad heads, cracked cylinders, etc.. seems like everytime someone replaces headgaskets they find that lol. My main problem with the Injection pump is just that im getting a code 35 and code 36 and have run additives, bled air from the system and from all the research i did just seems that the injection pump is going out. That would be fine for just driving around or trips but we do multiple week long camping offroad trips in remote areas so if something like an injection pump gives out there were going to have problems. The 6.5 im talking about buying is from a truck that was wrecked but of course i cant really know anything for sure about it. I do like the fact that the engine this guy is selling has the mechanical injection already on it which is something i was wanting to do.

I pulled heads on one of mine to do studs with no bad issues found. Cracks are there but they pass a pressure test, even if they did $700 for a set of GEP heads isnt terrible. There have been a few injection pumps come up for sale recently, I have 2 spares (not really for sale) that I have aquired in the past yr.

Are the Teds or Boyce complete runners or are they just long blocks? if they are complete won't they have db2 on them?

If you get the complete engine from the wreck I would go back to the rule of re-ring before install. If not then test drive new one for a week, then tear it down your old one and refresh it. The long term reality of these engines are you will go through a couple installs to keep it on the road, or usually after second engine swap people throw in the towel and get something with a "D" in the name. Don't get me wrong these are great trucks for the diy person. Not so much for people like my brother in law- oh I forgot to change the oil last year and it's making a noise...
