Here's my problem in short:
The work truck (only work truck) started to have a temperature issue at stop lights. The heater would stop working when stopped at low idle, but be fine on the road. I thought that was a little strange, so looked into it further. I didn't start the engine, but...
One of my greatest weakness is understanding the timing of the 6.5.
Years I've read about TDCO, advance, retard timing and I've never focused on it.
So, in another thread in asking for help with starting, someone brought up timing. I read posts and threads about koko, time set, etc, etc...
Well folks, I'm getting a little rusty here. So, I'm enlisting some helpful ideas from folks. There isn't really a no-start problem. It starts every time. I just takes a whole lot longer to get it started than any other 6.5 in driveway history. Bus 1 started in like half-a-crank, and so...
It's been very warm... okay down right HOT in the northeast here as of late.
Yesterday, after suffering a blow out of an o ring on the new lines I installed two months ago, I recharged the system. Name plate charge in the system, and off we go.
We were operating in large family time...
Ok, I know it's been a while and my skills are a little rusty, but I can't seem to come up with any ideas....
Here's the deal: All my 6.5's have always started very quickly... as in 1 second or less. With bus 1, even at 20 degrees outside, it would light up in about a half a crank. This...
If you have a 94 and newer 6.5, and you don't have cruise control, this thread might be for you.
This was my experience with my new-to-me-no-cruise-control vehicle.
Let's review for just a moment:
The 6.5 is a totally electrically controlled diesel engine. Diesels have no throttle...
Well, I haven't forgotten you folks in the last few years.... and now I can boast, not one, but two 6.5's in the driveway now. The Suburban now has a new arrival of an 01 Express 3500 friend in the driveway.
Hope all of you are well. I have recently started my own business and haven't had...
Howdy folks!
Well, as always, mechanical things will bring you back to the fold of old friends on the forum...
The suburban is wanting a little bit of love here lately. Today's episode brings us to taking the wife out for dinner, and then an impromptu stop at the auto parts store on the...
Is this okay practice to use Rotella T synthetic in a gasser 350? I'm thinking that if it's good 'nuff for diesel service, a gasser should be no problem.
Any thoughts?
Scored a new diesel compression tester today.
Did the drivers side (why else?) so far.
Disabled the IP fuel shut off solenoid (which must leak by because it still "wanted" to try to run). So, ended up cracking injector lines as an insurance policy.
I've only ever read of around 400...
Since we've now locally crossed over the $4 mark, considerations are being made now to say "what else can I do here to increase MPG".
So, on a dwindling budget due to increased food and fuel costs, I would like to know, what the consensus amongst everyone would be for best investment made...
In my gasser van the other day, I had to take it out for a quick ride to pickup two escaped dogs out the front door. Basset hounds can't find their way home once they leave for some reason, but I digress....
So, in a hurry, I start up the van, head to the end of the driveway and have to put...
Needin' some new tread on the suburban.... have the stock LT245... thinking of stepping up to LT265... in attempt of getting better MPG without a rear gearing change.
Can you go more/less... pitfalls and good points... thoughts?
Should you have an "F" engine VIN code, the only thing that your vacuum runs, is the turbo wastegate. It can be kind of a waste (no pun intended) for the serpentine belt to be spinning a pump, to create vacuum to hold a wastegate closed. Should you have a problem with the wastegate system and...
So, tonight was the bi-annual trip to the local inspection lane. Had to sit in line for between 30-40 minutes. It's 86°F while in line. About 15 minutes after being in line, I noticed the coolant temperature gauge rising. Hmm, okay... rev it up a bit for more GPM in the coolant system, and...
So, finished fabricating the homemade turbo master on the 'burb. Thanks to all who created a thread for the DIY guys to home grow their own. Mine is kind of a hybrid between ideas... will post on that later....
So, got all the parts installed, and went to adjust. With boost gauge installed...
Well, since Bus 2 will be finding a new home in the not to distant future... I moved the set of Optima batteries over too it from Bus 1 (slide out battery drawer, far, far away from the fire in the engine bay)
Since those puppies were pretty expensive, I thought, "hey I'm keepin' them...
So Mr. Sooty is history... wow... that was one heck of a restriction. Took pics, will post later.
So, with help of my son tonight, we castrated the exhaust. When it hit the ground I told him it was time for the celebratory "sing." Whenever the soot trap was off the Bus 1, it would whistle...
What is that little do-dad that comes off the the thermostat housing and looks like some quick push in for coolant to go on to the back of the passenger side engine where the coolant line's Tee's are connected? Mine is leaking slowly...
First fill up at 200 miles... 16.1 mpg. Highway miles, holding steady to the speed limit (with a little fun in between).
3.73 "F" engine. What say ya'll? About average?
Soot trap still intact with GM-8 turbo. No other fun stuff yet.
Looking for efficiency and LONGEVITY... not...
