Which end are you looking at? In that photo number 2 cylinder is off to the right. It might be a shadow from the picture, but I'll definitely take a close look at it once I'm home from work.
So I got the engine all torn down, left the crank sitting in place just to protect it.
All oil had been displaced by fuel and cleaned everything. The number one cam and main bearing along with rod number one where all worn to the copper showing. All the others had wear like it had 200k miles on...
Thanks. It's the first truck I bought when I was 16. So pretty much whatever it needs to stay around it gets, lol.
It's a decent shop. I'm mostly just happy to have a flat driveway. The house I grew up in had a sloped driveway, made for a fun time doing stuff like this.
I got the engine torn...
I've never run gapless rings before, what's the cost on them?
I have headstuds on the engine that's currently in the truck. They'll be getting reused on whichever engine I run.
So gave Teds a call today. Quoted $2950 for a 6.5, $350 for shipping. So $3300 even, not too bad I guess.
So now to decide to try and figure how I can afford one. Or use the 6.2 I have and originally started this thread about. Definitely cheapest to go with the 6.2 since I have it. The newer...
I would definitely check if something got suckered into the sump. Older tanks can have a small layer of cap on the bottom and the sump breaks it free when installed.
Filters are cheap compared to an injection pump.
I still have my 6.2 block which is good but I was trying to use a bulk of my parts up since I don't have a ton of storage for multiple engines.
Its a definite gamble once their cracked how long they'll live. One I'd rather not take with my limited budget.
I've looked at that very listing...
My stepside, which this engine will be going in. About 8 years ago I had the crank break right at the number 2 main journal. When I rebuilt it I spent the money for the forged crank. I got it from peninsular diesel, it wasnt cheap. I also have a fluid dampner. I wanted to be sure to not have...
Oh I would never reuse rings especially not knowing how the engine had been used or how many miles it has.
If I go the rering route I'll splurge for a set of gapless rings.
This is a definite budget build for sure. I'm not building for crazy power or anything. I will be using my hx40 instead of the gm8 this time around though. Buts that's the only performance change happening. Doing mostly for all the known reasons to dump the gmx turbo.
The last time I had...
I was under the impression that the 599 block was a better gm one to get? Miles are unknown on this block but when I pulled the pistons there wasnt any crazy wear on the rod bearings. I checked all the cylinders for size and all but 3 are within .003 of spec. The others were about .006. I'll...
So bringing this back up. After several weeks of crazy work hours and fixing little stuff around the house from the storm. I'm finally able to get back to work on the truck. And in the passing of all that time this happened.
Picked up a 599 6.5 short block. I really only needed the block but...
Quick update.
Got power back this afternoon. Still no city water but a neighbor has a well that's good enough to shower and such. So little ingenuity and both houses have some water at least.
Hopefully things will settle enough to get back to work on the old girl.
