In college we got to watch video of a race car engine valvetrain while running a hot lap. The problem wasn't valve float, it's valve bounce. The valves would literally bounce off of the valve seats multiple times when they would close. They would actually never stay fully close before they were...
Thanks, I'll have to check them out and see what I can find.
My brother brought up a good point to me today while we were talking. .075" isn't a lot, not enough that I could even see it moving the valve when I tightened the rocker bolt down, but it is a lot when talking about the amount of...
Nate had clearance issues with an aftermarket cam. His cleared when checking with the solid lifters though. I'll have to pull the cam out to check the base circle.
I'll probably just order one from Jegs. Looks like they have them for under $30. Problem is I don't know if I will even be able to find pushrods the length I need regardless. Stock length looks to be 8.822". So just taking the .075" off I'm at 8.747" and I can't find any that are even close to...
New found issue that I don't really get at the moment: I put the cam back to stock (lined the timing marks up) and bolted the head down to recheck everything and the valves still hit. Now, keep in mind, it's a regrind, so one would assume that the valves should be closing slightly quicker since...
Icl spec was 110-112. I was at ~111.5.
I could try putting another 2* offset key in and see what that does, but I don't know if that will be enough to clear, especially if I try to run my 1.6 rockers.
My mistake. I did the opposite head since the other one was already bolted down. It's the exhaust valve that is hitting.

Well sh*t. I borrowed Nate's solid lifters and got it all bolted down to check the stock rockers again....and it hits. Right before the intake valve closes, the piston hits it. So now we're back to square one. Going to talk with R&D and see what options we have on the cam. Would hate to scrap...
No, I never have. I weighed my extended cab long bed 2500hd duramax when I owned it years ago and I think it came in at 7800 or 7900 lbs. So with the lighter duty drivetrain/frame but also longer frame/cab and dual wheels, maybe somewhere around there? But I really have no idea.
Look on the bright side Leroy. If this cam works out and he actually starts selling them to the 6.5 crowd, you can start making offset keys to sell along with your gear drive! So in other words, you're welcome[emoji4]

On a side note to this build, I found out today that I have been hauling heavier than I thought with my current truck/engine. I was told that the gooseneck stock trailer that I use to haul livestock was only around 3500lbs. I never questioned it because of how easy it pulls. It's a steel, 20'...
That depends. Will you send me money to finish my build if I am? If so, then, yes dad, it's me! Now send me money so we can start patching our relationship.
I figure I will put the feeler gauges between the rocker arm and valve and run the piston past tdc in both directions to make sure it clears.
If the 1.6 end up not clearing, they may force me to try thicker gaskets and see if that works. Or I would reluctantly either stick the stock rockers...
I am running stock thickness gaskets. I have started to consider thicker gaskets since I've been thinking about going with a bigger pump, but I'm still undecided. Will probably end up sticking with stock thickness though.
If I could get away with it, I wouldn't mind even trying the 1.7 rockers...
I knew I made to quick of progress on everything this weekend. I completely forgot about the damn lifters.... Good thing I am on this forum with all you detail oriented people!
Nate gave me an idea on checking lift on the 1.6 rockers too. I think what I'll do is calculate the added lift the...
Installed a head, torqued to 100lb-ft, installed stock pushrods and rocker arms. Torqued the rocker arms down and turned the engine over about a hundred time. No clearance issues turning it over by hand. The real test will be when I check the 1.6 roller rockers. The only problem is that they are...
