    4L80e maintenance items

Maybe I should just have it gone through then. It's so hard to find a guy transmission guy though.

    4L80e maintenance items

I'm finally getting back to my project. Question. I've got an old 1991 4L80e that was working fine when pulled, but has been sitting for 10 years. I went ahead and replaced the pump seal and upgraded the wiring connector. Are there any other easily replaced parts that I should replace before...

    4l80e / controller questions

Nope it doesn't appear Wilber will return to back up his claims with some hard tech. Sad. So moving on... There are 2 different versions of the MLPS for the 4l80E. Any recommendations on which on to use? They seem about the same except one version has 1 electrical connector and the other 2.

    4l80e / controller questions

Can we keep this civil. All the aftermarket manuals I have read that mention the force motor do say to swap it out for the later version. The mega/micro squirt doesn't work with multiple low ranges so that's not an option. Wilber do you have a reference or first hand experience?

That will save me a few bucks over buying direct. Cool.

    4l80e / controller questions

I looked into swapping the shaft out and that looks easy. I was already planning on a cable shifter, either modding my 727 shifter or buying a Winters.

    4l80e / controller questions

Yes they can. Sorry to hear that and hope you recover fully. In other news I did verify that my trans has the rear tone ring. :) But it doesn't have a MLPS (or the bosses to mount one:banghead:) so I need to figure out a way to hook up a neutral safety switch and the reverse lights. I...

    4l80e / controller questions

Great info. You must be a technician. I'm probably going to have to change the PCS solenoid out anyway so it will be new. Excellent.

    4l80e / controller questions

Some cool news. They just put the new Quickshift4 on their webpage so I guess it's available now. It has 4 selectable tables which is exactly what I need. Can you PM me a price with the 4l80E harness?

    4l80e / controller questions

I will, but it still has the wires on it so I'm not worried. Also I bought it with a NP205 attached which was only available in 1991. Is it a bad idea to test the solenoids with jumper wires directly to a car battery? Would I hear them click with the pan off.

    4l80e / controller questions

Yes it looks that way. It's definitely an earlier model as it still has front and back wiring connectors (not plugs). I also read that the diesel torque convertor is fine with a big block. Still debating if I should have it rebuilt. I would hate to have it go out in the middle of BFE and...

    4l80e / controller questions

Ok, that makes sense. With only a TC sensor the engine would be screaming in double low before it ever shifted.

    4l80e / controller questions

I don't know about the factory controllers, but with the Optishift, it's a second program ("B") which you can set up however you want. Tow/haul, performance, economy, etc. There's a wire on the controller that you connect to a regular switch. Ground that wire via the switch and the TCM uses...

    4l80e / controller questions

I'm trying to get my head around this. Say the transfer case is in double low (5-1) and the shift tables say to shift at 20 mph. With only a sensor in the rear of the trans won't it shift super early, like 4mph (20/5)? What did the 1991 OEM TCM use the transfer case speed signal for? Thanks...

    4l80e / controller questions

There isn't a drawback that I can see, plus it'll let me save the B program for tow/haul mode. Tap shifting is going be extremely nice to have in the mountain driving here as well. Now I need to figure out how to do the momentary switches. I have a floor shifter so your column lever trick is...

    4l80e / controller questions

You know I may have missed something obvious. All these controllers have manual tap shifting. All I have to do is put it in manual mode when in low range and use momentary switches to shift. That way I have full control when off roading and will never get blind sided by unexpected auto...

    4l80e / controller questions

That was very helpful. Thanks. So the last few days I've done a lot of reading. What I've found is most aftermarket controllers don't have the capability to input your transfer case ratio. One that does is the MSD Atomic; when you shift into low range it accounts for whatever ratio you have...

    4l80e / controller questions

Thank you. I read up on the pressure solenoid and understand that now. Different frequencies. Thinking this over a little more I'm leaning towards just seeing if the 1991 4l80 works as is. If it's bad all the latest and greatest parts from the later models will drop in, correct? Really no...

I like the 5 year warranty. :) Is there a cheap way to hook up a gear indicator?
