The shift cable has something like a button where the two ends meet. It is released when a new cable is installed, I forget the process but you run the shifter back and forth then stop in a certain location. The button is then pushed in to lock the adjustment.

I wouldn't wait for the tank to swell, air makes a bomb out of a tank, then when you remove the air hose you'll have fuel spraying all over. Inspect the cap, it should be obvious if it is vented.

Welding the washer to the stud is easy compared to welding the inside of a nut to the stud. weld around the perimeter of the nut to the washer. leave enough of the nut to put a wrench on it. The extra heat also helps to loosen the stud.

All I can think of off hand is the coolant crossover temp switch. If the coolant isn't read as being up to temp, no overdrive. Or maybe it's TCC lockup?
