I noticed low oil pressure at hot idle. ~8 psi, just enough to trigger the check gauges light when braking while turning.
The inner cam bearings look scuffed so I’ll replace them and install the cam more carefully next time.
I heard a rattle after a couple rotations of the block on my engine...
Lots of reasons to own a diesel.
I think an old mechanical pump diesel truck is a good apocalypse vehicle. Very few things to fix if there was an E.M.P. or solar flare. The truck can sit a decade and not gum up injectors or carburetors like old gas does. Diesel stores for years without going...
Found out the hard way 90 ft-lbs is not enough torque for ARP head studs.
ARP instructions said 90, but after some research it looks like I should have gone to 125.
I re-confirmed the decks are square, so I’m sure it was because of insufficient torque.
While I have it apart again, I’m going...
Question - have you gotten o-rings installed on a 6.5?
What has your experience with them been? Good, bad?
Did you groove the block or the heads?
What wire material did you use, copper or steel?
What gasket did you use - Mahle, Fel-pro, Cometic? 0.010" thicker, or stock?
What were the...
I broke in my first rebuild by cutting down 4 large poplar trees and dragging them in the field ~70% load for ~3 hours with the hood up and cab heater full blast to keep temps down.
Dragging trees made for a very consistent load. Towing on the road varies engine load with hills and valleys. In...
@Jaryd The PDF attachments can be printed at 100% scale to 8.5x11" paper and used as a stencil for anyone who wants to make pieces using 1/4" plate, a jigsaw, drill, tap, and arc welder. Actually, between the bracket holes and the pulley hole one might get away without needing the welder...
I just pulled the balancer outwards enough that the pulley would line up ok, then tightened the balancer bolt as tight as it could go without sucking the balancer any farther back in. Seems to work ok as a temp fix. I'll find something like this to shim the balancer off the reluctor later. I...
Looks like my crankshaft pulley is out of alignment. Too far in. Is it possible to over insert a harmonic balancer?
Not sure if there’s supposed to be a gap from the crank snout to the balancer but with a torque of 200 ft-lbs it would be hard to leave one.
Or is there some kind of shim? Not...
@Jaryd @MrMarty51 no sorry.
I had it made a few years ago by the person who posted a DIY here. It was two pieces of sheet metal jigsawed and arc welded together with m10 & m12 holes drilled. I tapped another m12 hole for the vacuum pump delete and got a larger pulley so I could use the same belt...
Got the cooling system together and started it today. Used a drill to prelube the oil, shunted the lift pump to run and purged air from the FFM.
I then turned the engine over with the glow plugs out and loosened any injection lines loose that I could reach (1,3,5,7).
Once that was done I...
I’m glad your shop guy got back to you Will! I guess I’ll have to try nordlocks next build. Either way I’m glad to have a torque value to rest easy about.
Spent the day doing bolt-ons. Might get it under the hood tomorrow.
